The first home match of the season is in the books, and it ended with Atlanta United on the right side of a fairly convincing 4-1 win over a tired New England Revolution team that’s navigating Concacaf Champions Cup. While things got off to a slow start, Thiago Almada’s penalty in 1st-half stoppage time opened the scoring before Giorgos Giakoumakis went absolutely off.

I mean, come on. A hat trick capped by a terrific volley from an acute angle to open his account for 2024 meant that there was never going to be any doubt that GG would be selected as your man of the match. MLS took notice, naming him Player of the Matchday for his performance.
