Atlanta United announced on Wednesday, March 20th the loan acquisition of striker Daniel Rios from Chivas Guadalajara, where he’s been since 2023. Rios, originally from Mexico and part of Chivas when he started his career, was in MLS with Charlotte in 2022 where he scored 7 goals in 27 appearances, and Nashville SC prior to that, where he scored 25 goals in 61 appearances.
It’s no secret Atlanta United will need some depth pieces at various points throughout the season, and this loan will provide some more quality at a position that’s historically been very tough for Five Stripes’ backups. The club brought in Jamal Thiare in the 2023 summer transfer window but have no true, similar center forwards behind him.
If Jamal Thiare has to be pulled for any reason during the many matches Giorgos Giakoumakis could miss this season, Daniel Rios will still provide a big-bodied target for the likes of Saba Lobjanidze, Xande Silva, Brooks Lennon, and others. He’ll also push for time; he may be brought in as a backup to Thiare, but don’t expect him to make the choice easy for Gonzalo Pineda.
Daniel Rios will occupy a supplemental roster spot and has a green card already, but the club still has to wait on his ITC certificate. Regardless, he’ll be available for selection in a relatively short time.
What do y’all think of the move? Let us know down in the comments!

You know who I would love to see be the Almada replacement? Gio Reyna. I still don’t get why he doesn’t get a shot consistently at the USMNT/Dortmund, both teams are better with him on the field, and he fills the exact playmaker role Almada plays.
As I say that he gets a 2nd ET assist that was beautiful
No thank you. I can only imagine his attitude and body language having to accept playing at MLS coming down from EPL/Bundesliga.
He could be phenomenal, hoping that the whole World Cup family drama/attitude saga is over.
Yeah he can’t help his parents being dumb turds.
I have to guess that he either doesn’t look as good in training situations, or is hard to get along with, because his on field product is consistently good enough to play almost anywhere in the world
Fútbol is life?
Idk who he is, so I assume he’ll be great.
I mean.. a third-string striker that’s actually scored goals before. 1 goal for every 3-ish appearances. Hard to complain about that.
Especially given our history and lack of depth at that position. I wonder how he fits budget wise.
I have no opinion on the player, but understand the move to bring in a backup for Jamal. It seems like a guy that we hope only plays when we want him to, and not because we have to use him.
What do I think of the move? Rios hasn’t been great in Liga MX and he wasn’t available because he’s awesome. I suppose the best case scenario would be that he turns into Dwyer 2.0 but there’s probably a stronger chance he’s actually Cubo 2.0. I get the reasoning behind it though. Uh, I’m not really sure he’s going to “push for time” so we’ll see how that goes. But if you’re right, I’ll remember you called it first, Tyler.
The guy is basically a replacement for Miguel Berry, if you’re looking at the squad at the end of 2023 vs the squad today. As long as he’s better than that, it’s an upgrade.
Which, Miguel was… 1 goal in 30 appearances in 2023, 11 goals in 86 appearances with MLS clubs.
LAFC brought Berry in for a look right? Anyone know if he ever got signed or got any minutes with them?
Signed to a two-year deal. He’s been sub’d in every regular season game…playing around 20min a game
Wow. And I assume no goals. Better them than us.
LA Galaxy. And they also paid us something for him, which is baffling.
Are you sure? I thought we signed him on a 1 year deal with an option year and declined his option..
