This morning, Tom Bogert reported that Atlanta United declined an initial $6 million verbal offer from Cruz Azul for star striker Giorgos Giakoumakis.
Cruz Azul is expected to continue talks for Giakoumakis. However, Atlanta United has zero interest in selling the Greek international and designated player.
If Atlanta’s opinion of selling Giakoumakis was to suddenly change, $6 million would still be a tremendously low offer. While Atlanta only paid around $4 million for the striker from Celtic, he scored 19 goals in 32 appearances in all competitions in 2023 and has 5 goals and 3 assists in 8 appearances (599 minutes) in 2024. The starting forward has perfectly filled both the roles of Atlanta’s star player and prolific goal scorer since Josef Martinez’s departure in 2022.
Bogert also reported that Atlanta United has begun initial contract extension talks with Giakoumakis, but they haven’t gotten very far. His current deal lasts through 2025 with a club option in 2026. His base salary for 2024 is about 1.6 million.
