Atlanta United announced today its end-of-season roster decisions, which determine whose options were picked up, whose were declined, and other pertinent squad changes before the offseason truly kicks off in earnest. Interim head coach Rob Valentino also posted on Twitter/X his appreciation post, saying he’s out from Atlanta.

Note: this article will be updated as more info comes out from Atlanta United’s press conference.

Updates from press conference

  • Garth Lagerwey noted he met with Rob Valentino this morning to notify him of the decision that he wouldn’t be the future coach, and gave tons of praise for everything he did for the club. Noted that Rob did great, but the club is looking for more experience.
  • Garth pointed out that the team is down to a couple of finalists for the head coaching job and wish to have that announced before Christmas, and said they would likely make a final decision by next week.
  • Said the team wants to recalibrate some players salaries to reflect their role on the team.
  • Noted the sporting director timeline would also be before Christmas, but hoped within the next couple of weeks.
  • Looking to start by adding a defender and an attacker, and use both DP spots – one almost certainly for a striker but possibly left wing, too.
  • Noted Sosa and other U-22s will be discussed with other clubs who are interested.
  • Lagerwey said the way he’s working on establishing the connection between the new coach and sporting director has a lot to do with his many connections through the league and the old-fashioned manner of just making sure they have meetings together and have chemistry.
  • Pointed at that one potential change is whether Noah Cobb could play right-back, which ties into potentially adding a new defender.
  • Said as an example of building blocks the team already has, the team needs to add more speed up front to help Miranchuk have more space and for the midfield to play in balls behind the defense.
  • Pointed to the U-22 spots as “really good investment vehicles,” but said Atlanta United wants to build around prime-age players. Said focus is on full DP’s and players from the Academy, but that the U-22s aren’t the biggest focus.
  • Noted as far as DP attackers, they may look at both striker and left winger, but some of that will depend on the new coach. He noted that almost positively one will be a “center-forward.”
  • The team is not handicapped by the amount of money made in this past summer window.
  • When asked about Josef Martinez, Garth said they’re not closing any doors but reiterated the team is looking for speed.

Without further ado, here is the list of moves that affect the outgoing 2024 version of the Five Stripes, straight from the club.

  • Goalkeeper Brad Guzan, defender Efrain Morales and midfielders Jay Fortune and Santiago Sosa had their contract options exercised.
  • Six players had contract options declined including Erik Centeno, Nick Firmino, Ronald Hernández, Franco Ibarra, Jamal Thiaré and Tyler Wolff. The club remains in negotiations with Hernández, Thiaré and Wolff. All players are eligible for the MLS Re-Entry Draft except Wolff who will go on waivers.
  • The loan for forward Daniel Ríos expires at the end of the calendar year. Midfielder Dax McCarty is retiring after a 19-year MLS career. Goalkeeper Quentin Westberg is also retiring after spending the last six years in MLS.

The MLS offseason begins on Monday, Dec. 9 with the half-day trade window opening at 9:00 a.m. On Wednesday, Dec. 11 the MLS Expansion Draft will take place with San Diego FC joining MLS next season. Free Agency and End-of-Year Waivers open on Dec. 12, followed by the Re-Entry Process, Stage 1 on December 13.

These changes represent the beginning of the most critical offseason in Atlanta United’s relatively short history. 2024 has been tumultuous, with some massive transfers and acquisitions in addition to the firing of coach Gonzalo Pineda and technical director Carlos Bocanegra. A couple of Designated Player spots sit open, U-22 spots are coming available, and the aforementioned technical director needs to be announced. Add that to the now verified empty head coaching gig, and Garth Lagerwey and company have their work cut out for them.

We wish nothing but the best to the outgoing players and to Rob Valentino! Be sure to join us over on our Youtube tonight as we discuss all the changes, and let us know below what y’all think of all the news so far.

Going back to the matchmaking between the head coach position and sporting director, since it’s such a unique position you’re in with both being vacant, can you talk a little bit about what metrics you look into to make the decision that they’ll be a good fit for each other?

Bringing Hernandez and Thiare back makes a lot of sense at a more manageable cap hit. Both of them can play a solid role on the roster. If I am Wolff, I entertain offers to get more playing time.

As much as I wish Valentino could rejoin the staff, it really doesn’t work for a 3rd time. He needs to go after one of the numerous open positions.

Also, really hoping a LW also happens. The production from the left was non-existent this year.

I like seeing that the club is negotiating with Thiare, Wolff, and Hernandez. I think there is a role for each of those guys at the right salary figure. We will need Hernandez next year since our only healthy RB on the roster is currently Matthew Edwards. I don’t see Cobb as a RB, but could see him playing a right CB in a back 3.

We must have not gotten any decent offers for Ibarra. Otherwise, we could have converted up to $2.4 million of that transfer fee into GAM. And we may be getting better offers for Sosa than the $4 million reported.

it seemed kind of odd that they mentioned Cobb might shift to playing RB. Has he even played that position with the 2s or even during the Academy times. He definitely has not played RB with the national team

Grey Gowder

I think he may have played one of the fullback spots in a break-glass moment at the professional level but that’s the only instance I can think of.

He has the recovery speed to play out wide but needs to continue working on his passing and crossing.

The only two reasons I can think of for the position change:

  1. They want to get him on the field, but Gregersen and Williams block him from playing CB in a 4-man backline.
  2. They may be concerned about his height, especially after Benteke dominated him in the air last summer.
schyoo

I can agree with the first reason, but the second reason, Benteke dominated a lot of CBs last season to be fair hahaha

Grey Gowder

It is almost a badge of honor to be on Benteke’s highlight reel. That only makes Morales’s performance against him that much more impressive.

I hope the intent for Cobb is more of a wide centerback instead of a fullback. In a back-3, he would be a fantastic right centerback.

I think the way our current roster is set up, I think it would be great for Atlanta to more forward with a 3 CB set up, like a 3-4-3 set up would be great

Grey Gowder

I’m still a bit wary of the 3-4-3 from our previous experience trying to play that position. Slisz and Fortune are a good midfield pair, but I’d feel more comfortable with a third guy in that group.

Since we are rebuilding our center forward group, too, do we want to play with a single forward or 2?

I would be more comfortable with a 3-5-2 than a 3-4-3.

schyoo

I think 3-5-2 would be fine as well, but I guess all this is moot point if the new HC prefers a 4 back line

very glad garth moved on from valentino. no disrespect to rob, i think he’s done well by the club for many years. but time for a clean break.

next 2 – 3 weeks should be very telling for what next season will look like for us. and please, please, please don’t re-sign hernandez. i have spoken.

Clueless Joe

Wonder how exercising Sosa’s option affects the speculated purchase of the player for Racing.

WhichWayRay

I wonder if we had to take it due to the loan to Racing conditions.
It looks like decent moves. We just need to fill in a few holes with some good DPs and a Head Coach, and we’ll be good. We need to figure out Guzan’s heir. not that I don’t like him in the net or starting just father time is coming.

I think we wait on tying up a roster spot for the eventual Guzan heir. Cohen is a competent back up. Need to make a big splash to find his replacement next year.

Grey Gowder

Guzan, Cohen, and Hibbert is a solid depth chart for 2025. Jonathan Ransom and James Donaldson are really good options in the academy pipeline.

Southern_Azzurri

Also, what is the latest on Hibbert. I heard good things about him. Probably not an immediate option, but does he have enough potential to groom into a starter in 2 or 3 years?

Grey Gowder

He could be our starter in 2026 if he continues on his trajectory. He will still be young and will make mistakes, but he could be on a Brady or Schulte trajectory. He is on track to represent Jamaica after Andre Blake.

Grey Gowder

If we cut him, they get him for free if the winter transfer window hasn’t opened for us yet. This is just keeping his rights long enough to sell him to the highest bidder.

Also, Vancouver fired Vanni Sartini and Tata Martino is leaving Inter Messiami for “personal reasons”, replaced by Javier Mascherano, a former teammate of Messi.

DakotaKSU

Tata leaving again? Shocker…
I have tons of respect for him but he simple is not interested in a long term job

TioMessi

Maybe a dumb question, but do we know why RV is leaving completely? Received HC offer elsewhere? FO let him go? Or he’s ready to be an HC and FO told him he was going to remain an AC so he is just leaving out until an HC offer comes his way?

A.M.D.

In his own words: “Valentino’s out.”

TioMessi

I don’t know that there’s enough in that statement to answer that question. Just means he isn’t staying. Not why.

Clueless Joe

My guess is we did not offer him the Manager job, and would allow the new Manager, whomever it is, to pick their own assistants.

Essentially, we let him go.

Tim

Would you stay at a place where you kept getting battlefield promotions before being put back in your place when they hire someone else?

I’m thankful for Rob’s work here.

I’m thankful he’s not the long term choice. This is supposed to be a big club. Get a big manager.

I’m thankful Rob’s not staying. There’s a whole world out there. I wish him much luck.

ShortRound_RB

I wish Valentino the best, I hope he gets a good job (maybe Austin? I haven’t checked to see if they picked a HC yet), but for now I’m glad we’re looking elsewhere. Of course that assumes the coach they are bringing in is a good pick and not a worse one.

Clueless Joe

NYCFC and Vancouver also have openings.

gravity shack

ugh and ugh. austin could be a good job though
