One of Atlanta United’s veteran goalkeepers, Quentin Westberg, announced retirement today. Westberg, a former US international who spent the majority of his career in Europe before joining Toronto FC in 2019, has spent the last couple of seasons in a backup/mentor role with the Five Stripes.
Westberg is likely the first (second, if including Dax McCarty) player to confirm their departure from Atlanta United, as the squad has a large number of roster decisions to announce by 1 P.M. on Wednesday, November 26th. Westberg leaves a storied career involving the throes of promotion battles in Europe, and even being the guy who stopped Atlanta United and Josef Martinez from hosting a second consecutive MLS Cup in 2019.
He arrived at Atlanta in 2023 and immediately stepped in as a mentor to some of the younger goalkeepers in the club, while also playing a variety of minutes throughout the season. He returned in 2024 for one more year, capping off a long and successful career. He was often mentioned by other players in interviews as being a massive boon for them in the locker room and at the training ground.
Westberg will certainly be missed at the club and in MLS, but we wish him the absolute best of luck going forward!
