No, you aren’t dreaming. And no, you haven’t been magically transported back to December of 2016. The rumors continue to swirl around Atlanta United closing in on their newest, and simultaneously oldest, number 10. While we’re at it, let’s take a look back and reminisce on Miggy’s 10 best moments (so far!) in a Five Stripes’ kit, for nostalgia’s sake (and a bit of scouting, perhaps?).
10.) Philly tiki-taka
Already up a goal, Miggy orchestrates the Atlanta squad, playing a give-and-go with Josef Martinez before unselfishly playing it back across for Tito Villalba for a second. Exhibit A of an Atlanta United team firing on all cylinders.
9.) A comeback #AfterDark
To this day, perhaps the wildest match Atlanta United has ever played, and fittingly the birth of “Five Stripes After Dark”. The 4-1 down to 4-3 win comeback in the late hours of the night on the East Coast was in part thanks to the contributions of Almiron, who scored the leveler before providing Josef with a dime of a cross deep into stoppage time for the winner.
8.) Chipping away LA
In a demolition derby of the Galaxy, Miggy capped off a four goal first half with a splitting run through the defense and a nifty first-time chip over LA’s goalkeeper. The speed. The control. *Chef’s kiss*
7.) Home Opener top bins
A smashing effort from 18 yards out, this felt like the moment that kicked off a season for the ages (don’t look up what happened a week prior). In front of a sold-out home opener crowd, Miggy kicked off his All-Star year by going top shelf with this one. Banger.
6.) Snow-lazo
Taking it back to Atlanta United’s second *ever* match, expectations were mixed coming into Minnesota. After a solid yet losing performance in the inaugural match prior, there was plenty of uncertainty over the Five Stripes’ ability to do it on a cold and snowy afternoon in Minneapolis. This half-volley from distance, combined with another goal and assist, played a big part in shutting that narrative down and showing, for the first time, what Atlanta United’s talented attack was capable of.
5.) Columbus solo’d
In the second half a back and forth battle with the Crew, Almiron picked up the ball at the halfway line and hit the gas all the way to the 18 yard box, where a pinpoint strike to the bottom corner beat two defenders and a pre-European transfer Zack Steffen.
4.) Fighting off Lions
In a moment that lives long in Atlanta United lore, Miggy finished the burial of Orlando with his brace and the team’s fourth goal in a memorable way, receiving the ball at midfield before shouldering off Atlanta’s current Head of International Recruitment and Development, Jonathan Spector, on his way to hit a drive through the legs of goalkeeper Joe Bendik to send the Benz into raptures. Surely there aren’t any lingering feelings there, right?
3.) Clutch in the Conference Semis
In the second leg of the 2018 Eastern Conference Semifinals against NYCFC, Atlanta led 2-0 on aggregate with a single away goal. Enter Miguel Almiron to pull Atlanta to a comfortable lead with a tremendous free kick just before the half, sending the Five Stripes onward with momentum into the Eastern Conference Finals.
2.) “An absolute peach”
Arguably Almiron’s most iconic match, and maybe Kevin Egan’s as well, the rainy weather cleared away from Bobby Dodd Stadium just in time to see a Miggy hat trick take down the Houston Dynamo. A left-footed rocket in the 30th minute, an off-balance strike in the 42nd, and a penalty to seal the deal in the 80th all helped push the Five Stripes to a 4-0 victory in one of the more legendary of the pre Mercedes-Benz Stadium matches.
1.) MLS Cup curtain call
After two seasons, 22 goals, and 30 assists, two MLS Best XIs, and to top it off, an MLS Cup, an ovation was more than deserved for Miguel Almiron. With a transfer over to Europe expected, the largest crowd in MLS Cup history was able to send Miggy off and show their appreciation for the club’s first number 10, whose scintillating play won over an entire city, if not only to the club then to the sport as a whole. Almiron in turn saluted the fans back in one final walk off the pitch, his last in red and black. Unless…?
If a transfer is made official in the coming days, how much more magic could we expect to see from an older, Premier League tested Miguel Almiron? How would he fit around an entirely new cast, save for Brad Guzan? Can Miggy himself be the one to bring back the vibes of those first two seasons, or are we just wishfully nostalgizing for a past nearly seven, eight years behind us?
There’s much to think about until then. At least we’ll always have the highlight compilations.

Miguel Almiron was truly a golden kid signed to MLS for juggernaut team Atlanta United. Signed and trained by Tata Martino during his tenure with the Paraguayan national team and with Lanus, bringing both Tata and Almiron was certainly the best thing anybody in MLS can ever asked for. Seeing his speed, his slim build, his intelligence and ball control in a generally physically and tactical league with so much demands shows and almost in a way inspire me to see that you don’t need to by physically strong and tall to be in MLS. Almiron showed that! He made me, along with the rest of the Atlanta United team, have a special place in my heart and as a result, made me root for ATL which are now my 3rd favorite MLS team (After Seattle Sounders and San Diego FC, which was my home for 8 years). (: Gracias por todo! Welcome back to Atlanta United Señor Almiron 7 years later! Thank you for coming back home! We have a special place in our hearts for you!
[…] he took home the MLS MVP Award, he was a best-XI player in both 2017 and 2018, and he provided countless moments of joy for Five Stripe fans accompanied by his trademark smile. When he rode off into the sunset (sunrise?) across the Atlantic […]
I just read that Almiron will not be officially “signed” until closer to the first of the MLS season because NUFC is down some players, schedule congestion, and to keep Miggy game ready. It is the silly season though, so who knows if it is true.
Even with terms agreed, I worry that this will result in an injury that keeps him out in Atlanta.
also, MLS transfer window does not open until 01/31
I’m just worried about the trophy cabinet. Will it be big enough??
Continuing to lean in….
He is really coming back, it seems.

Atlanta probably won’t announce anything until the transfer window opens next week
I’m guessing they do something at the Chattanooga game given they keep plugging its the same as our first game back in 2017.
The thing I loved so
Much about those guys was how connected they were with the fans. Giving us high fives, celebrating with us. That piece was just so special
Love it. I’ve been watching all sort of highlights these last few years, some more than once, more because of my analytical brain but also for nostalgia. He’s the reason many of those 17/18 wins occurred due to his vision, speed, and ability to control the ball.
Is he going to be the sole reason for a season turnaround? No. So I think this solves a lot of problems? No. This will get the fanbase hyped again though and it will bring some more energy back to the Benz, and it’ll be great to see him play again stateside.
The hard part for me is whether Ronny see’s him for what he brings, utilizes him properly, and let’s him cook. I’m still on the fence about where he plays. Right wing? CAM? We’ll see. If he and Miranchuk vibe, man, that’ll be awesome along with Saba on the opposite wing and whatever striker we have. Then with solid mids like Slisz, Klich, Muyumba and Fortune, wow.
Hello, dear Atlantistas. Bringing Almiron back is too perfect. If your F.O. gets this done, I will gladly change my perception, and believe that Atlanta has a shot at getting back to its recent greatness.
We’re winning it all now!
From TheHardTackle.com; apparently Miggy had a PL suitor as well.
The Paraguayan international has also been ready to part ways with Newcastle United in the winter transfer window after spending half a dozen years with the Tyneside outfit. Almiron did not have a shortage of suitors pursuing his signature, with over ten clubs, including Crystal Palace, vying for his signature this month.
What next?
Crystal Palace’s interest in Miguel Almiron was understandable despite his recent struggles at Newcastle United. While Ismaila Sarr is gradually growing in prominence this season, Oliver Glasner can do with more firepower in the final third. So, the Newcastle United outcast was a viable target for Crystal Palace.
However, the South London club will lose the race to sign the 30-year-old forward, who will return to his former club Atlanta United this month. The two parties have already sealed an agreement on personal terms. In addition, the Five Stripes have advanced negotiations with Newcastle United, submitting a bid worth £8 million plus add-ons to the Tyneside outfit.
Apart from Crystal Palace, Olympiakos, Charlotte FC, Santos, Botafogo, Sao Paulo, Palmeiras, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Leicester City, and VfB Stuttgart were also keen on signing Almiron. However, the Paraguayan international will return to MLS in the winter transfer window, possibly in a deal worth around £8 million.
That was a phenomenal walk thru memory lane. Thank you!!
Man, I had kinda forgotten just how electric those first couple of seasons were.
NOSTALGIA YESSS
10) Wow that assist was insane, arguably harder than scoring would have been lol
7) GOLAZZOOOOO
6) Can’t wait for another win like this some day
5) That’s absurd. Wow.
4) I didn’t know Spector was a recent player, much less that he got rekt by Miggy like that lol
3) That free kick was so good it looked like Almada
2) Efficient
1) Sad that nothing lasts forever, but happy it happened.
Watching this back, I honestly think Pity was the most similar replacement we could have gotten. But man nobody except Josef and Almada have reached the same individual heights here. Just incredible. I don’t know how we got this team together under such a bad FO, but I’ll take it. I hope chapter 2 is as successful, if not as explosive.
The difference (in my opinion and from what I can remember) is that Pity was not really a runner like Miggy was. He was an exceptional chance creator, but he wasn’t going to put the whole team on his back and just make a tackle in our 18, run the ball all the way to the other side, and make the assist like Miggy would.
I still think Pity could’ve done really well here, we just didn’t have tactics, the patience, or really the team build around him to make it work.
Pity could have shined in the role if we hadn’t deconstructed the entire midfield behind him and immediately chased competition for his position. We needed Pity +a healthy Josef + Barco (if he’d play the wing) plus Julian Gressel.
Man, I’ve got a pool of drool on my floor now.
Are we all doing some collective daydreaming today?! I’m not usually one to rewatch old games because nostalgia can be a dangerous emotion as a fan, but I have been rewatching some of our 17/18 “classics” on Apple this morning in preparation for the return of our first #10…
I’ve just been leaning into it…enjoy it! Some folks are thinking just because he’s older that means he’ll be less effective. He’s spent the last 6 years in the Premier League, Champions League experience, etc, and if it were any other player everyone would be super thrilled.
I said it on the show the other night, somewhat off the cuff, but don’t let the negativity of yesterday rob you of happiness today.
I don’t think you guys were too negative yesterday. Hilarious episode a few nights ago though. We’re all giddy. But 30 is just not that old in sports anymore. Miggy has spent 6 years soaking up PL knowledge and playing with and against the best players in the world. He comes home a better, smarter player, maybe a little less explosive, but maybe not. Lean the F in, brother!!
