Atlanta United go from “best kind of football” to “bang-average” in Inter Miami loss

Latte Lath sat silently, his face telling the story of his disappointment in the events of the evening.

Players made their way to the showers and back, many without saying a word — not that they needed any to make their feelings crystal clear.

Such was the scene inside the Atlanta United locker room on Sunday night after a 2-1 loss to Inter Miami at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. A place that used to be a fortress had been breached once more, this time by an opponent that — despite its star-studded lineup — Atlanta had handled well in past years.

Not on this night.

“I think the first 25 minutes was our best kind of football. We’re passing it quickly, two touches, going side to side,” a dejected Derrick Williams said. “We must have had like three or four chances. And then once we go away from that, we get sloppy.”

One of those chances produced the first Atlanta goal in nearly 200 minutes, a well-placed cross from Brooks Lennon that was met by the head of Latte Lath. What appeared to be a second goal in the 19th minute was called offside — correctly, as Latte Lath’s upper body was shown leaning just past the last defender.

That would have made it 2-0. But after a poor turnover by Bartek Slisz led to a Lionel Messi goal, and despite more heroics by Brad Guzan to keep Miami at bay, a moment of miscommunication between Williams and the Atlanta keeper ultimately led to Fafa Picault’s 89th-minute winner.

“We don’t mark our man quickly enough, and then the header, it was slow motion,” Williams said. “I thought Guz had it, so I could have cleared it if I didn’t think he had it. But I thought he had it, so it was just a mix-up, and the ball goes in.”

Inter Miami 2, Atlanta United 1. That’s three straight winless results for Atlanta, who can’t afford more nights like that in their building, not with a lengthy road trip scheduled for the summer as the Benz is occupied for the Club World Cup.

They appeared to have a handle on things on Sunday until they didn’t, getting away from the “best kind of football” they exhibited in the first half.

“The gaffer’s big on it, going side to side, just getting them unbalanced. And it shows when we do that, we have so many chances,” Williams said. “So it’s just frustrating when we don’t do that, when we start being slower on the ball, taking more touches, and then going out of position. And that’s when we look like a bang-average team.”

Next up for Atlanta is a trip to FC Cincinnati on Saturday, their ranks reduced due to FIFA’s international match windows.

All that’s left to do, with 30 matches still to go in the regular season, is to pick up the pieces and go again.

“We have such a strong squad. I still think we’ll be okay,” Williams said. “But we just have to do the right things, the simple things, and be disciplined. It’s when we go any way off that is when we look very average.”

The team is neither as good nor as bad as some might think. Also interesting that Miggy seems to have gone all in on the dark arts of football. That might end up being more of a sentimental signing than anything else. TBD on the coaching staff…that could go either way and want to see more but do think that, if the going gets tough, my read on the coach is he’d very quickly check out. All that said, going back to the first point, don’t think Charlotte and Miami are given enough credit for being solid (MLS) sides this year. We are effectively still in rebuild mode, searching for an identity and with a bit of a hodge podge of pieces that have individual merit but aren’t optimal as a unit. Mosquera is a good example…plenty of skill, wouldn’t want to ever have to play that guy even as a sub. AM looks to be a dud. Why isn’t Klich seeing more game time?

Mic

Klich is injured.

When I watch your guys games it doesn’t feel like the team bought into the managers tactics. A lot of talent that is being misused. Ask yourselves why is it that Mira (your fav scapegoat), Saba, Miggy, even ELL aren’t playing at the level you expected them to? Why does the team deflate so drastically? It’s been 4 games, plus full pre-season. The pressure should be mounting on the coaching staff.

According to Williams, the “gaffer’s” tactics are moving the ball side-to-side to unbalance the opponents. I would argue they are doing that way too much. Plus they’re inviting pressure at the back and then either turning it over or booting it long *after* doing the hard work of keeping it from the opponent for five or six passes. It’s giving Pineda ball :-(.

Who all are we missing for the next game? Do we know yet?

augoat

Out:
Miggy, Gregerson, Slizs, Fortune, Abram, Morales, Brennan (U20), Cobb (U20)

Out from AU2: Dominik Chong Qui (U18) and Kaiden Moore (U18)

Looks like Saba, Miranchuk, and ELL will remain with AUFC this time.

ShortRound_RB

Dang. Do we even have a backline left? That seems like our entire depth of CBs outside of Williams.

augoat

Yeah, CB is decimated. I think Edwards has played CB in college and/or with AU2, and Hernandez can fill in (if he’s a go). That’s a mess.

Midfield isn’t a ton better. I guess Muyumba and Will Reilly start. Maybe Klich can go? He wasn’t on the bench on Sunday with a quad injury (listed as questionable).

Wing, we have Saba and Silva, but then it gets down to Torres and Gordon, I think (I’m assuming Mosquera is out after being stretchered off the field but have seen nothing on the injury). Thiare could probably play win, but he missed Sunday with a quad injury, too.

I guess the positive is that none of ELL, Saba, or Miranchuk were called into NT camps. MLS playing through this window to accommodate Leagues Cup is stupid. I’m frustrated with the slow start this season, but I’m not going to be too critical about a poor result vs Cinci.

Subs: Cohen, Thiare?, Togashi, Klich?, Hernandez?, Gordon, Torres, ???, ???

From ‘the best kind of football’ to “bang average” and the stuff Williams said in between was a good assessment of the Atlanta-Miami game. From “so elated” to “so deflated” is how I’d decribe my reactions. I hope we manage to pull out an against-the-odds, severely understaffed, surprise victory in Cincy.
