Atlanta United at Chicago Fire: Match Thread and How to Watch

Atlanta United is back on the road and back in the national spotlight (can someone turn it off please?) once again this afternoon as they travel to the Windy City to take on the 11th in the East Chicago Fire.

Both sides come into the match in woeful form, the Five Stripes winless in five while the Fire are winless though six games in league play. Atlanta, fresh off of a 1-1 draw with Nashville that saw them end a record setting goal drought before immediately trying, and failing, to hold that one goal lead. Chicago, meanwhile, put a starter filled lineup out in U.S. Open Cup play against Detroit City and won in a convincing 4-0 rout. With their 7-2 loss to Nashville in the rear view, the Fire will be looking to capitalize on home turf against the struggling Five Stripes.

Atlanta will still be without Stian Gregersen, and Pedro Amador is listed as questionable for this afternoon. It’s not great news for a defense conceding nearly two goals per match thus far, but the return of Tristan Muyumba at least gives Ronny Deila another option in midfield.

After last weekend’s change in tactics led to not a loss, but not a feel-good result either, will Deila continue to adjust his side in search for the best combination and setup he can find? Or will this Atlanta squad try yet again to play a complete match for the first time this year in the unfriendly confines of Soldier Field?

Wow. I don’t even know where to start.

Shhh

“underwhelming results and a disappointing level of play.” Reason our coach was fired from his last job. Sound familiar?

Matt5931

I’ve yet to see any redeeming quality of RD

JBG

A 2-1 defeat and all goals scored by Chicago

WestCoastATLien

I dont want to overreact because it seems like we have some personnel issues in terms of finding balance but it felt like Muyumba placed more line breaking passes in 20 minutes than the rest of the team combined over 90, sans Fortune.

ATLNino

Garth and the front office has whiffed bad on this roster. It is so awful that I can almost miss Bocanegra.

VAMOS ATLANTA

And of course we give them their first home win. We seem to be the team that people end their curses against.

ATLNino

Abram is a traffic cone. We are so bad.

Gatorsnake

So where is Owen Gol on the team leader list now?

WestCoastATLien

By my count, legitimately tied for 2nd with Almiron at 3

VAMOS ATLANTA

That’s why you put the ball in the box

Matt5931

Is Saba not 90 min fit?

Matt5931

And why do we refuse to play him on the right where he is better

ATLNino

Because we have to play Miranchuk for some reason.

Josh G

It keeps getting worse.

LTJ

I just had this exact same thought. It all needs to be redone at this point. Very painful.

JBG

When Gutman looks like a very dangerous player against you then you know it’s bad. Really bad.

WestCoastATLien

I understand more each passing week why DC was willing to take any relief they could get with Klich.

Under no circumstance should he be penciled into any lineup over Fortune.

At what point do we think about Cobb there as an experiment?

Klich doesnt tackle well, doesnt cover much ground, isnt physical, and isnt good enough with the ball to be a release valve or control tempo.

Someone must have read “Art of the Deal” before deciding to sign him.

ATLNino

Agree. But it’s either him or Sliz, who is also unimpressive.

JBG

All of that, 100% agree. He looks genuinely uninterested in winning the ball.

ATLNino

Aside from Fortune, our midfield is putrid. Nobody tries to win the ball.

On offense, we look like a U-14 team. No creativity, no off ball movement. Our strategy is to push it down the side and play low percentage crosses. We cannot work through the middle or break lines. We paid all that money for Lath, and can’t get him the ball to save our lives.

This is pathetic.

VAMOS ATLANTA

What the actual heck happened to Lennon. His crosses used to be on point but the problem was that we had nobody to consistently turn them in. Now that we have someone to turn them in, his crosses are just awful.

ricop001

Said this 5 games ago. #59, Abram, hernandez, Lennon, #43 and Guzan, are shit players…miggy is showing wht the premier league got rid of him. All these players are useless and need to be gone. Get the young players on the field and allow they to grow…I am tired of watch this sorry, rythmless, skilless, team

Matt5931

Guzan is hardly the problem on this team

ricop001

he is a shit player regardless….. that needs to not start..he is slow, holds the ball to long, never triggers a counter…and cannot pass well.

ATLNino

Guz is past his prime, but agree with Matt5931—he’s the least of our problems. This roster has lots of holes, and the coaching staff does not seem to be able to overcome them.

JosefBetterThanCarlos

Idk why your Guzan comment got down voted, everything you said was right. He’s become a liability, has never had good distribution, and is slowed by age. It’s time to start Cohen.

Eric

The is terrible. Like everyone is bad other than Fortune. Really poor effort

Matt5931

We’ve sucked the joy out of watching soccer

ATLNino

Miranchuk is the worst signing we’ve ever made. No question about. He’s worthless.

Matt5931

At least the worst “big” signing for sure

Colt42

Hard to argue when a highly paid professional makes such a boneheaded play.

Mic

Remember when he was signed, our “genius” said, “we are back, BABY”!,,,,,

Matt5931

Can we please get rid of alexei

VAMOS ATLANTA

The empty stadium is giving me Sunday league vibes.

Eric

We playing a 4-4-2?

Matt5931

Is Mosq hurt? Why is Jay on LW again?

Chris J

@tyler: you mentioned on the pod that you had a theory about the many afternoon games…what is it?

Mic

I think this is it for afternoon games.
