Borussia Dortmund dominated the first half, then survived an early second-half goal by Monterrey in a 2-1 win in a Club World Cup Round of 16 match at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Tuesday night. Dortmund will now face Real Madrid, who defeated Juventus 1-0 at Hard Rock Stadium earlier in the day.
Serhou Guirassy struck for a first-half brace with goals in the 14th and 24th minute, but Germán Berterame’s 48th-minute tally pulled one back for Rayados before his 65th-minute equalizer was wiped out on an offside call.
Guirassy’s first goal came just before the quarter-hour mark of the first half, as he took a pass from Karim Adeyemi and blasted it past Monterrey keeper Esteban Andrada for a 1-0 lead.
Guirassy struck again 10 minutes later, capping a solid buildup with his second of the night to double the margin.
Monterrey, who looked a bit out of their depth in the first half, received a lifeline in the 48th minute as Berterame’s header beat Dortmund keeper Gregor Kobel to cut the lead to 2-1.
That put momentum solely on the side of the Liga MX outfit as they controlled play from then on. They looked to have pulled level with less than half an hour remaining as Berterame finished a 1v1 opportunity past Kobel, only for the offside flag to come up.
Monterrey would get no closer, though, as Dortmund saw a tense match out to advance to the Club World Cup quarterfinal. They’ll face Real Madrid on Saturday at MetLife Stadium.
Dortmund will be without Jobe Bellingham, who is suspended for the quarterfinal due to yellow-card accumulation.
