Yet another move for Atlanta United in this transfer window comes from within as the Five Stripes have signed defender Nyk Sessock from Atlanta United 2, the club’s MLS Next Pro side, to a contract through the end of the 2025 season. The deal includes a team option for 2026.
Sessock has made two appearances with the first team this season, making his MLS debut back in June against NYCFC. Most recently, the 25 year old appeared on Saturday against Pumas in Leagues Cup, coming on as a substitute in the 70th minute.
Splitting his time between right back and right midfield, Sessock has made fourteen appearances with Atlanta United 2, all of which he has started. Prior to joining Atlanta this past February, Sessock spent two years with Inter Miami’s Next Pro affiliate, playing over 2,000 minutes in each season.
Sessock adds much needed depth to Atlanta United’s current defensive roster, which has been decimated by the departure of three center backs in the past couple weeks. While not a center back himself, Sessock can potentially take the place of Ronald Hernandez in the lineup, freeing Hernandez to move centrally as seen at the end of the Pumas match. It’s not ideal, but allows for a semi-capable body to play at center back while Juan Berrocal’s visa situation gets sorted out in the near term.
Sessock could also see more minutes in the increasingly forward facing lineup decisions we could see as Atlanta inches closer to elimination from playoff contention. However he sees time, keep track of Sessock over the next few months as he looks to earn a spot on next year’s Atlanta United roster.

Good for him. That’s a big moment for him and his family. I hope he does well.

Atlanta also signed Cooper Sanchez to a homegrown deal as well.
Sanchez is an interesting one, while his Homegrown deal start time got moved up a couple of months, he’s still technically “Off-Roster” meaning Atlanta still needs to use a max of 6 short term call-ups for him to play MLS matches.
and neither, Nyk or Cooper play CBs, so doesn’t matter too much.
