Last weekend, Atlanta United played a match with something still at hand, at least for one of the teams. The 1-1 draw with Western Conference leaders San Diego FC knocked the newcomers back a bit into the fray of teams vying for both the conference title and the hotly contested Supporter’s Shield.
Tonight is a bit different. The New England Revolution joined Atlanta in the realm of the eliminated last weekend, falling 1-0 on the road to the Philadelphia Union. This makes for a truly meaningless league matchup with no bearing on anything other than the technically still alive Wooden Spoon chances.
The 2026 preseason got off to a great start with a surprising performance against San Diego, where the Five Stripes were truly in control against an uber talented San Diego side. The only reason for Atlanta not pettily taking all three points was a gaffe from Steven Alzatein the first half; an Almiron penalty brought the hosts level with a penalty conversion in a dominant second 45′.
We’ll see if that performance continues as players continue to fight for their place in next year’s team as Atlanta United embarks on the final road stretch of the season. New England will be faced with a similar task, with the added quirk of impressing whoever their new boss will be, as interim manager Pablo Moreira has stepped in following the firing of Caleb Porter less than two weeks ago.
Will we get another predominantly starting caliber lineup as Atlanta seeks some pride-restoring results? Or will Ronny Deila turn to some lesser seen players to show what they can do as the season winds down?

This game has been classic Atlanta United 2025. Looked great first half, just can’t put it in the back of the net, and then the other team makes adjustments and starts scoring.
