Atlanta United vs D.C. United: Match Thread and How to Watch

Atlanta United midfielder Bartosz Slisz #6 during the match against the D.C. United at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA on Saturday May 11, 2024

We made it, y’all. At long last, we’ve finally made it.

Kudos to you, person reading this, for enduring the slogfest that was Atlanta United’s 2025 season- the worst in club history. You are reading the last of the the match threads for a year almost everyone would certainly rather forget.

Not all is lost to the meaningless void, however. Believe it or not, there are stakes to be had in this match tonight between two dismal Eastern Conference sides who have one MLS win each since the beginning of June. In play is the coveted Wooden Spoon trophy for the last place team in the entire league, which as fate has it will be decided on Decision Day between the two teams still in contention. Atlanta will “win” the hardware with a loss, a draw or loss for D.C. means the trophy has a home in the nation’s capital.

So, that should keep fans with something to be occupied by while watching what lines up to be a very uninspiring battle between two mediocre at best, dreadful at worst soccer teams.

On a more wholesome side, and perhaps the more important thing going on here, we’ll see the last of club (and sport as a whole, really) mainstay Brad Guzan take his place between the sticks one final time before he brings his professional playing career to a close. Although most knew and expected an announcement of the sort from the 41-year old, it’s been a pleasant surprise to see just how valued and appreciated Guzan has been in his nine years with the club, the final mainstay from an inaugural roster that captivated an entire city.

The tributes and memories from fans, players, media, have been incredible to witness over the past week, with more to come surrounding tonight’s match. As sicko as adding a Wooden Spoon to Atlanta’s trophy cabinet would be, Brad Guzan deserves to go out on his goalkeeping career with a result, and ideally a clean sheet to boot. It’s up to the team to make that happen. We’ll find out if they can.

Kickoff from the Benz coming your way at 6:00 PM ET, synced with all other Eastern Conference matches taking part in the Decision Day festivities. Before then, though, come join the Scarves and Spikes live show just across the way at Signia by Hilton’s Nest on Four for one last hurrah as we close the book on the 2025 season. Welp. It’s been real. Time for college ball and European soccer.

The reality of what is at stake in this match and the message that was sent out earlier from Arthur Blank shows the depths to which this team and organization have sunk. A lot of tough questions need to be asked of the FO personnel, and the members of the squad – and that needs to happen sooner rather than later if we are to have a shot at improvement in 2026.

If you had told me in February that the final game would be fighting to not get the wooden spoon, I would have laughed in your face. Well now, I guess it’s time to FIRMLY switch gears to European soccer, NFL, college ball, and other sports for a while. Goodbye 2025 Atlanta United. I doubt I’ll miss you.
