Could Atlanta United be close to adding to its goalkeeping room?
According to reports from South American journalists Cesar Luis Merlo and Uriel Iugt, Newell’s Old Boys GK Lucas Hoyos is set to sign with Atlanta United on a free transfer once his current deal ends on December 31. Both report that Hoyos’ contract will run through December 2026 with an 18-month option through June 2028.
The 36-year-old Hoyos, who came through Newell’s academy, was signed to a professional contract in 2010 and made his eventual debut with the club in 2014 after loan spells at San Martín and Gimnasia y Esgrima. From there, he spent time with Instituto (2015-16 and 2017-18) and Atlético de Rafaela (2016-17) before signing for Velez Sarsfield in 2018. He returned to Newell’s in January 2023.
At the very least, this provides competition for Jayden Hibbert for Atlanta’s No. 1 shirt in 2026. But it’s not hard to see Hoyos, who was away on loan during Martino’s time at Newell’s, stepping in as the starter due to his vast experience. In any event, when put up against the other names linked to Atlanta over the past few weeks, Martino is certainly looking to put his stamp on the team.

“Martino is certainly looking to put his stamp on the team.” Indeed.
This time last year we were just announcing the new coach hire.
I would hope he is a starter. I still can’t justify wasting an international slot on a bench veteran goalie.
Also, he hasn’t played the whole 2025 recovering from an ACL injury in his knee. He played one game with the Newell’s 2 team. So he should be super fresh for 2026.
Thanks for the flashback to Guzan sucking as he recovered from his season ending injury
To clarify, not at all angry at you, just now that you mention he spent all last year recovering from an ACL injury, makes me worried he’s going to be very rusty this year.
