AMB Sports and Entertainment on Thursday entered into an agreement with the City of Marietta to purchase a 33-acre lot on Franklin Gateway that will serve as the site of the NWSL Atlanta training ground. The motion for the city to enter into a memorandum of understanding with AMB for the purchase was approved by a unanimous 7-0 vote by the Marietta City Council.
The site, located at 1019 and 1033 Franklin Gateway, is a half-mile from the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Training Ground.
“We have a deal,” Marietta mayor Steve Tumlin said, as NWSL Atlanta 2028 scarves were passed out to him and the council.
“This project delivers significant benefits to our city through economic growth and new park space for our residents and families,” Tumlin said in a statement. “We are excited to welcome NWSL Atlanta to Marietta and proud to be the home of both women’s and men’s professional soccer. The arrival of the women’s team is certain to inspire young women and girls in Marietta and beyond.”
Along with the women’s training facility, which will be approximately 38,000 square feet, the site will feature four fields and two half-pitches. As part of the deal, the city of Marietta will purchase 10 acres across from the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Training Ground at 866 and 876 Franklin Gateway for community use.
For the design of the training ground, AMB has enlisted IMPACT Development Management as well as Populous, one of the largest sports- and entertainment-focused design firms in the world. Per AMB, a groundbreaking will take place “soon.”
