Back in 2010, Paraguay’s last trip to the World Cup, Miguel Almirón was 16 years old. Matías Galarza was eight. Now, after a 16-year absence, La Albirroja is set to make what will be its eighth appearance in the tournament.
First, though, Paraguay have two friendlies ahead during the international break, beginning with Friday’s against Greece. Greece, which will miss out on the World Cup for the third straight time, is currently ranked 46th in the FIFA standings and has faced Paraguay just once before. That was in 2010, a 2-0 win.
After Friday, Paraguay has one more match remaining on its calendar before the World Cup: it’ll travel to France to take on Morocco, the shock semifinalist from four years ago. As far as the match against the Greeks, TV/streaming info is below if you’re keen on keeping an eye on Almirón and Galarza in this pre-tournament tuneup — while hoping that neither man gets hurt, of course.
(By the way, former Atlanta United man Giorgos Giakoumakis isn’t part of Ivan Jovanović’s Greece squad.)
