Atlanta United entered the World Cup break with — get this — another loss, as they fell 2-0 to the Columbus Crew at Scott’sMiracle-Gro Field. The Crew scored twice in the first half and, despite an improved second half for Atlanta, it goes down as another defeat as the Five Stripes head into a much, much needed break.
Some quick after-the-whistle thoughts:
Columbus’s goals in the first half
I mean…how does that first goal happen? First, Saba Lobjanidze fired an awful free kick into the box, then just got turnstiled by a Columbus player on a 4v1 for the Crew the other way that they inevitably scored on. Danny Higginbotham was rightfully critical of Atlanta for conceding in the fashion that it did.
To be fair, the Crew looked like scoring well before that. They dominated possession for much of the first half and could have been up by a couple of goals the way they were playing. Outside of a spark Tomás Jacob provided that ultimately led to its free kick, there wasn’t much you could point to and say, “They did that well.”
The second goal was naive defending from Juan Berrocal, not the first time his defensive skills have been found wanting. There was no reason to be all the way over near the left touchline. That meant that no one was accounting for Diego Rossi, who made Atlanta pay.
It’s simply incredible how poor this team looks match after match.
The break is here…finally
Going into this match, there was plenty of apathy from the fanbase, and for good reason — due to the holiday weekend and the poor performance of the club. This break couldn’t have come soon enough for Atlanta United, who don’t play again until July 17 when they visit Nashville SC. There will presumably be some major changes to the look and feel of this roster. (I, along with you, can think of more than a few players who shouldn’t be here in mid-July.)

i’m still of the mindset we need some veteran MLS players who know this league and are genuine leaders. Hoyos isn’t a leader, I don’t see any of our CB’s being leaders. Our fullbacks aren’t leaders. Our midfielders just graduated high school. And our forwards are about as close as we have. We lost our one midfielder who could take control of the game.
Good news is we only need 2 more transfer windows to turn everything around.
At this point, it would be a miracle if they turned this crapfest around in just two windows. :-/
Can we just shut this crappy excuse for a team down and bring the White Caps to Atlanta? Surely that would be better for the White Caps and definitely for Atlanta. I’d have to buy some new kits, but I’ve save tons of money not buying ATL UTD kits for all the years we’ve sucked.
And how long would it take for this FO to f-up a successful squad?
I’m losing count of the number of times I think to myself “thank God we get a break from watching this team for x weeks.” How pathetic. I didn’t get to watch today but I wasn’t even all that concerned about it. Crew is a team in a free fall and we still can’t manage a result of any kind. I know it’s probably career suicide for the FO, but they should really be considering just selling a large number of players at a loss at this point if they want to save what’s left of the fanbase.
What’s become very clear to me is the fact that our scouting is probably the worst in MLS. I look at other team’s purchases and those players are performing way above our DP’s or TAM players. Our record pretty much shows it. We are where we deserve to be.
Y’all, I am so beyond apathetic at this point.
Zero improvement
Zero hope
Tata cant get ANYTHING out of these frauds and is not helping either with his starting selections and tactical decisions
I just have nothing.
I’ve really been disappointed with Tata II. Late subs, strange line-ups, stubborn to move away from “his” guys, no priority to the Cup, etc.
Please use all the buyouts, sell players off, find ways to offload as many of these dead weights as possible. Pretty much other than the homegrowns, we need a new team.
Becareful, someone in the FO might misunderstand and try to continue unloading homegrowns and keep bringing on dead weights.
So business as usual?
