Atlanta United has completed the first incoming move of the summer 2026 transfer window, as the long-simmering acquisition of Junior Alonso has been finalized. The rumor first gained legs (again) around the end of May, but Alonso and Paraguay had some tournament called the World Cup to attend prior to any club business.
In our exclusive with Atlanta United’s Chris Henderson early last week, he spoke of the club’s desire to bring in some more leadership while building the squad to be sustainable. Alonso is a known quantity who at one point captained Atlético Mineiro coming out of the uncertain COVID years and led them to a Copa do Brasil and the Brazil Serie A title. As the team’s newest center back, following the loan expiration of Juan Berrocal, it’ll be up to him to work with Enea Mihaj and Stian Gregersen to sort Atlanta’s defense into something much more respectable so the offense can have room to operate.
“Júnior is a hard-working defender who will help add solidity and stability to our backline,” Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Chris Henderson said. “He’s a natural leader, reads the game very well, and brings great experience from South America and Europe at the club and international level, recently representing Paraguay at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. We’re excited to welcome him to Atlanta.”
Alonso is signed through the 2028-29 season. Welcome to Atlanta, Junior!

So 3 of Paraguay’s starting XI are/were Five Stripes? Other than the USA game, they gave up only a goal each against Turkiye, Germany, and France (and a clean sheet against Australia). Of course, they never scored more than one (none against Australia and France).
We are gonna need every bit of 5 signings. We still need a solid winger, a striker who can finish, and some help in the midfield

I’ll reserve judgement once he’s had some minutes playing against some attack minded teams (which we should have plenty of in our next several matches).
I wasn’t happy about how the highlight video they released had *no* defensive highlights whatsoever; it was all long balls.
