Atlanta United’s pursuit of a possible Emmanuel Latte Lath replacement reportedly involves Breel Embolo. Now, Darwin Núñez’s name can be added to the list.

According to Tom Bogert, Atlanta United is “in early talks” to sign the Uruguay international forward, who is set to leave Al-Hilal of the Saudi Pro League by mutual agreement just one year into a three-year contract.

Núñez, who can play at striker and on the wing, joined Al-Hilal ahead of the 2025-26 season on a three-year deal worth a reported €53M, posting nine goals and five assists in 24 matches. That came after three seasons at Liverpool, where he was a key part of a team that won the Premier League in 2024-25. While with Liverpool, he scored 40 goals and 22 assists, including an 11g/10a campaign in 2023-24. During the World Cup, he made two starts across three appearances for Uruguay but failed to find the scoresheet.

Of course, any move like this hinges on selling Latte Lath and opening up a DP slot. Atlanta’s benefit when it comes to a potential Núñez signing is that he’d be on a free transfer. That said, he’ll have various suitors, one of them possibly being FC Barcelona (per Sport newspaper in Spain). Stay tuned.

We all just want a competent striker at this point. At least some of these names appear to be so
