Recap: Atlanta United humbled by New England, 4-1

Atlanta United had hoped to capitalize on a come-from-behind draw at Charlotte FC, but instead suffered an embarrassing 4-1 loss at the New England Revolution on Saturday night.

With Tata Martino suspended due to yellow-card accumulation and Jorge Theiler serving as acting head coach, Atlanta found itself trailing in the 11th minute thanks to a familiar foe. Carles Gil was given too much space from beyond the box to curl a beautiful strike past Lucas Hoyos to make it a 1-0 game. It was Gil’s sixth goal in 13 career matches against Atlanta, tied with Orlando City for his most against an MLS club.

In the 36th minute, the Revs struck again. Alhassan Yusuf combined beautifully on the right side of the box with Brooklyn Raines and crossed it into Dor Turgeman, who finished first-time at Hoyos’ near post to make it 2-0.

Miguel Almirón had two golden chances to cut the lead in half late in the opening period. First, he found himself in pace inside the penalty area with Matt Turner pulled off his line, but his shot saw the ball trickle toward the goal and eventually hit the right post. Later, his attempt from well outside the box was tipped over the bar by Turner.

Meanwhile, the Revs made it 3-0 in the 56th minute. A poor giveaway by Cooper Sanchez deflected off Yusuf and into the path of Turgeman, who fed it to Gil. After Gil’s pass found the run of Yusuf inside the box, Yusuf’s cross to Miller was struck cleanly into the back of the net.

Brooklyn Raines made it 4-0 in the 67th minute, connecting on a give-and-go from Jackson Yueill for his first goal of the season.

Miguel Almirón scored in the 85th minute to end the Revs’ shutout bid, but the match was well in hand as Atlanta United remained winless since returning from the World Cup break. They wrap up their long road swing against the Philadelphia Union next Saturday.
