Good Wednesday morning! We’re halfway there. Jackson here getting your MLS All-Star matchday started, which kicks off tonight in Charlotte.
The best from around Major League Soccer, led by Charlotte FC boss Dean Smith, will meet the Liga MX All-Stars for the fifth time since the format began. MLS leads the series 3-1, and won 3-1 last year in Austin.
No Atlanta United players will feature (big surprise), but plenty of star players will be out there, including the likes of Son Heung-Min, Thomas Müller, Hany Mukhtar, Petar Musa, Carles Gil, and more. Others will not be present, despite being named to the roster: Lionel Messi and Rodrigo de Paul are taking some extended vacation post-World Cup, while Hugo Cuypers and Sebastian Berhalter will miss out due to recent transfers to clubs abroad.
Last night brought the Skills Challenge to Truist Park (no, the other one) where, despite a weather delay, plenty of fun was had. Thomas Müller broke Evander’s Shooting Challenge record set last year, only for Evander to equalize his 79 point total afterward. Tim Ream earned the crown in the Passing Challenge, while Orlando City and Canadian National Team goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau came out on top in Goalie Wars. Necaxa’s Javier Ruiz took home the Crossbar Challenge title, and Liga MX won the first edition of a new Relay Challenge, a gauntlet of previous challenges combined.
