Talks between Atlanta United and Breel Embolo have apparently heated up, with Guilliame Lainé from French newspaper Ouest-France reporting on “significant progress in negotiations” that would bring the Rennes and Switzerland international striker to the Five Stripes on a transfer worth “at least” €15 million.
Per Lainé, Embolo, who is under contract with Rennes through 2029, has a release clause in his contract and has been given the go-ahead from his club to depart.
While Atlanta and Embolo are reportedly progressing, the 29-year-old could have some high-profile suitors. Ben Jacobs reports that Napoli and AC Milan could be interested in his signature as well, along with unnamed clubs from the Premier League.
As far as other potential strikers for Atlanta, Darwin Nuñez appears to be off the table as reports have him going to Turkish outfit Trabzonspor on a one-year loan from Al-Hilal. There’s interest in Romelu Lukaku as well, with the Napoli striker not reporting to training and “100% leaving” the Italian side, according to reports. And there’s interest from Atlanta United in a No. 6 from South America, as they’re reportedly in on 21-year-old defensive midfielder Mauricio Amaro from Uruguayan first-division side Defensor SC.
With less than 30 days to go until the transfer window closes, things appear to be moving a little faster. As always, stay tuned.

I cant believe I am reading that some ATL fans dont want a youngish starter from a top notch world cup team to come to Atlanta. How high are yall lol
I dont know if he fits the Tata game plan. This feels like we need a DP, so we are gonna try and find someone who is willing to play for Atlanta, instead of a great fit for the team. I feel he will come here and be meh at best
IMO we shouldn’t be making too many moves until the new manager is on board but this is the best option of the names thrown about so far.
Do you know something we don’t know?
Just my gut saying Tata will want out early…
Tongue in cheek, or is this some sort of insider knowledge?
Better that Lukaku, but by how much, I don’t know.
Off topic, but anyone have thoughts on Almada coming back to River Plate? Makes me wonder if he just wants to come back home, or if there were performance issues in Europe. the transfer fee is supposedly 20M Euros, so they’re not letting him go for nothing.
Encouraging in a vaccum but seems like a Miranchuk-esque signing in that infusing talent without raising the floor of other parts of the team may not amount to much.
are there no young (under 25) strikers that is willing to come to Atlanta?
Breelo is only 28. He’s 6’2. I can’t help but think about how dominant 6’3” Christian Benteke was in DC.
Agree with this!
His injury history is awful, but it seems he’s been mostly injury free and not showing any lingering knee issues since returning from the ACL tear he suffered in 2024.
Yeah. More GG than Josef but I’d welcome a GG back given what we’ve had recently.
Still not overwhelmed by this potential signing, but he likely (hopefully) will be better than what we’ve had for the last couple of years (and certainly better than Lukaku). Might be better to play the kids and wait until the Winter transfer window to acquire a striker.
Eh? I’d prefer him over Lukaku, but still.
Someone get on the swim team merch. You know, because we dive all the time. I’m sure there’s a crossover with the olympics kit.
Ha! Well played sir.
