Good morning, y’all! Jackson joining you on this Tuesday to bring you another Scarves and Spikes newsletter.
It’s a full week of rest for the Five Stripes coming off of a slew of matches where, despite a range of performances, Atlanta was unable to collect more than two points from three games. On a positive note, Giuliano Galoppo has finally received his visa, allowing him to participate in training and join the team for its upcoming match in Portland this weekend.
Meanwhile around the league, Orlando City and the Philadelphia Union continue to soar up the Eastern Conference table. Orlando have won three straight, unbeaten in five, while Philadelphia haven’t lost in MLS play since the World Cup. You can’t avoid the name Cavan Sullivan of late, as his inclusion and form has been the catalyst for the Union, while Griezmann in Orlando has elevated the Lions to a new level.
In MLS Next Pro, Atlanta United 2 approaches the final match of the regular season this weekend in a tightly contested playoff seeding race. A loss to Chattanooga FC 4-1 means the 2s can end the year anywhere between 3rd and 9th, depending on results. Despite the loss, Arif Kovac was able to find the net and hold sole possession of the Golden Boot. Will he remain at the top after the week is done? The 2s will visit Orlando City B on Sunday afternoon for Next Pro’s decision day. Finally, be sure to give your input in our community player ratings from Atlanta United’s 0-0 draw against D.C. United over the weekend. The rating form will close at 7 pm tonight.
