First the first time in over four years, Atlanta United heads to Portland, Oregon for a late night cross-country endeavor. Hope you have your coffee at the ready, as well as your mental sanity put to the side. It is #FiveStripesAfterDark, after all.
Let’s begin with some head-to-head stats, courtesy of stats.scarvesandspikes.com:
It’s just the seventh all time meeting between the two sides, the most recent coming in 2023, where Atlanta ran rampant in a 5-1 win. Atlanta’s goalscorers? Wiley, Almada x2, Giakoumakis, and Araujo. Nobody on that roster from that match remains with the team today, the last departure being Ronald Hernandez last month to (guess where?) Portland. We could be set for a reunion tonight with one of the longest serving Atlanta United players in the club’s history.
Atlanta’s last match in Portland, which was the year before, ended 2-1 to the Timbers and resulted in a lot of chicken and rice on the floor. Hopefully, no food goes to waste tonight.
On a postivite note, and for the first time in a long while, Atlanta United has a perfectly clean bill of health heading into this match. Visa watch is also over, as midfielder Giuliano Galoppo is with the team and has practiced ahead of his potential debut. Tonight, we can finally get what Tata Martino views as his preferred starting XI.
Before the match, get acquainted with Atlanta’s opponent with our 3 Questions series, this time with Timbers broadcaster and journalist Adam Susman.

YUUUUUGE win. Best game of the year?
YES
Given the opponent and their home field, yes
ITS THREE POINTS, ITS TWO CLEAN SHEETS IN A ROW
What a freakin win! Embolo made everyone better, Alexey with a curler, Hoyos was solid. Hopefully a sign of things to come! Vamos ATL!
Okay: things looked good
Totally losing possession and control of the match right now.
How on earth does Embolo keep the ball every time. It’s truly amazing
Really good from Embolo there. Might? Wel…
Ngl, that play looked like a top 4 team. Also, HOW ON EARTH IS DIEGO CHARA STILL PMAYING LIKR HES 20?!!
OMG he finally kept one on the ground hahaha
Too defensive with this much time left
Just like a certain team in a certain World Cup match at a certain stadium…
Good debut for Galoppo.
That chainsaw being spammed right before the free kick must be so annoying for the players taking it lol.
Diaz is smothering that dude.
Gonna guess that Portland player is chirping at Edwards
That mighta been a bit to much dawg Edward’s…
Too much – I apologize, it’s late and I’m really tired
Yep
BIG test. Can you keep the second half up?
This is what we haven’t been able to do consistently since the pandemic really.
Much better from Miranchuk tonight so far, seems like he meshes well with Galoppo (except for when Galoppo decides to run right in front of his signature shot)
Still not completely sold on Amaro, was hesitant to see Galoppo immediately start, but admittedly he seems to be doing decently well.
Overall impressed with the energy and fight from the team. Moreso I’m excited we actually have some depth at the moment. Having Fortune, Cooper, Gill, and Picault, and Mihaj all ready to sub in means we don’t have nearly as much drop off as recent months.
Amaro is much better tonight.
Love that from Edward’s lol. We need some more dawg in this team
Yes!
Said the same. They’ve shoved us all game and he was like “ight, enough is enough”. He’s got that dawg and didn’t back down
I don’t care what no one says about Embolo. That man is a dawg
He absolutely makes the team better.
Even when he isn’t scoring he’s impacting the game.
As a striker should. Just so sad how truly astonishingly bad Latte was for this team.
What are you seeing? He seldom wins the ball and has missed easy opportunities. He is better than Lathe but certainly has not shown up as a striker yet.
*United player CLEARLY gets injured*
Portland “boooooo!!!”
Come on
Edwards for jacob
That goal was in slow motion lol
Amazing it was so slow and he still had no chance. Perfectly placed
What a freakin goal. Filthy!!!!!!
Hell yeah. He’s been working really hard tonight. Well deserved.
GOOOOOOOAAAALLLLLL
That left foot is worth a couple great moments a year
Miranchuk has literally been one of the most consistent players post pandemic. Just so clutch and is sure to give you at least 5 goals a season
Not playing through Almiron. Seems very intentional. Galoppo drops but plays higher and more central than cooper. Seems much more attacking minded which could be good.
First impressions.
Playing with a sense of urgency.
Very refreshing after some of the recent performances
Dang, Diaz down already. Not a good sign.
Hello to my fellow late-night sickos. Hopefully there isn’t any chicken and rice on the menu tonight…
Galoppo getting the start, with Amari and Muyumba. That is a message from Tata IMO. Can’t wait to see this line up.
I remember seeing this time on the schedule on the announcement of the season. But wow, 10:40 is gonna be late. Yikes.
Portland brings some big matches and history with our club. This will be an interesting one. If I can stay awake 🙂
