If you haven’t seen already, Atlanta’s NWSL branding was released into the world yesterday morning as Atlanta City FC, sporting a red and peach colored phoenix that rises in front of a dogwood roundel. Initial reactions are spread across a wide range, but very reminicent to me of the Atlanta United unveiling, where a relatively “safe” name and unassuming logo became an entrenched brand in the city once the team took to the pitch.
In news from around the weekend, Atlanta United played to a 2-2 draw with NYCFC in what was described as a “six pointer” for both clubs in the postseason race. With a roster picked half apart due to the international window, the Five Stripes managed to come back twice from being a goal down to level the match. A well earned two weeks’ rest is now underway before Atlanta’s next match on October 10th against a stuggling FC Cincinnati.
In league news, LAFC have parted ways with manager Marc Dos Santos as the club has failed to reach the lofty expectations rightfully placed on it at the season’s beginning. Now with one win in the last two months, LAFC have dropped down to sixth in the Western Conference, with the most recent loss to FC Dallas being the final nail in the coffin.
We also witnessed a Philadelphia Union team without many key pieces thrash Orlando by a 4-2 scoreline thanks to a hat trick from Milan Iloski. This result extends a remarkable run from the Union, who now find themselves solidly in playoff contention down the home stretch after a bottom dwelling start to the year.
Finally, the USMNT play their second of four friendlies this window tonight at Energizer Park in St. Louis against Chile. We’ll be watching to see if the kids can continue to impress after a 4-1 win over Peru on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 8:00 pm ET.
