International break time’s over, folks. The Five Stripes are back for the home stretch of the 2026 season, kicking off the first of seven matches over the course of the next month tonight against FC Cincinnati. Playoff stakes are in jeopardy between two sides who find themselves on the wrong side of the playoff line, and have I even mentioned the hurricane passing through?
Let’s begin with some head-to-head stats, courtesy of stats.scarvesandspikes.com:

If you can remeber back to the very start of the 2026 season, which seems like a lifetime ago now, these two sides kicked things off against each other, with FC Cincinnati picking up a 2-0 win at home against an Atlanta squad featuring Latte Lath, Saba Lobjanidze, and Juan Berrocal. My, how things change in nearly eight months.
Those changes, specifically the center back duo of Jรบnior Alonso and Paulo Dรญaz, along with the rest of Atlanta’s international contingent are now back with the squad, which should be a boost to Atlanta’s squad as a whole. I say should, as two weeks ago we saw a limited Atlanta roster score twice to earn a point against NYCFC… not a noticable step down from expectations.
The overall head to head matchup is real close, but the Five Stripes will have the benefit this time of not having to deal with one of the league’s top players in Evander, who misses out due to a leg injury. Atlanta also dodges former Philadelphia midfielder and new Cincinnati signing Josรฉ Martรญnez, who won’t be ready for action quite yet with a knee injury. Still, striker Kevin Denkey poses a goalscoring threat up front with 14 goals on the year so far. He’ll be looking to push his side, who are now winless in their last six, over the line in Atlanta.
The Five Stripes, menawhile, are only missing Will Reilly, who is currently listed as out with an ankle injury. The rest of the roster is available as the squad aims to keep their slim playoff margins alive in a tightly packed Eastern Conference table. Atlanta is three points off the bottom and CF Montreal, but also six points back from NYCFC and the playoff line. The almost weekly talking point now, as improbable as it may be, still lingers: Atlanta United needs to pick up wins, and quick, to have any shot at postseason play.
