Those who have wished for larger crowds at Atlanta United matches this season may finally get what they asked for. Unfortunately, most of that crowd might be wearing pink.
That’s right, it’s that time of year again: Inter Miami.
Let’s begin with some head-to-head stats, courtesy of stats.scarvesandspikes.com:
It’s quite the double game week for the Five Stripes. Atlanta United goes from a visit to last place in the conference CF Montreal on Wednesday, where they cleaned up nicely with a 3-0 win, to hosting second in the conference Inter Miami tonight. It’ll be a gauge of where this team truly lies between the bottom and the top as the end of the season draws near.
These two sides met just last month, where Breel Embolo dispatched a debut penalty in the 87th minute to help Atlanta escape Nu Stadium with a 2-2 draw. The Five Stripes have seemed to fare much better on the road than at home this season, an interesting trend that they’ll look to buck this evening in the Benz. Since that match, Miami has gone on to lose just once in seven matches, securing their spot in the postseason and picking up a Campeones Cup trophy along the way.
Despite the state of, well, everything, Atlanta United have managed to not let Miami dominate the head to head series between the two clubs. It’s an even 7-5-7 between Atlanta and Miami, helped no doubt by Atlanta’s two thrilling playoff victories in 2024. Miami’s gotten two wins and a draw in the meantime, but have only ever won twice in the Benz since their start in 2020. Maybe, just maybe, Atlanta will have some extra fight in them for this matchup.
It’ll help to have the one manager in the league most suited to facing Messi and his companions, that being former Inter Miami manager Tata Martino. With tired legs from the midweek match, though, we’ll see how any changes to the lineup are handled. Miami, too, played on Wednesday, a 2-0 win at home over NYCFC.
As far as availability goes, Tomas Jacob is back from his one match suspension, leaving Will Reilly the lone player to be out for this one.
Tonight’s match is set for a 7:40 PM ET kickoff in the Benz. Streaming is available per usual through Apple TV. If audio is more your vibe, 92.9 The Game has your English language coverage, while La Mejor is your go-to for Spanish radio.
