Atlanta United at New York City FC: The fat lady has sung

What else is there to say at this point? Atlanta United went into this match clinging onto playoff hopes by the skin of their teeth. They could have destroyed New York City Football Club 18 to nil and still failed to actually make the postseason. They kicked off this game by far the better squad at a point when it really didn’t even matter anymore, and still didn’t put the ball in the back of the net (officially) throughout the entire first half. It’s frustrating, but here we are. The Five Stripes are out of the 2026 playoff race. Here are the final whistle thoughts from New York City.

Don’t worry about figuring it out now

Atlanta United has been figuring it out for years, or at least trying to. At this point in the dwindling season, they have no one to blame but themselves. The Eastern Conference afforded them many, many mistakes, but they never took advantage of any of them. No matter what happened tonight in the Big Apple, they were most likely going to be eliminated from what truly matters in 2026. It’s nice to see that there were some decent patterns of play and a couple of players showing fairly well, but ultimately the ratio of creating chances to actually putting them in the back of the net is unforgivable. By all accounts, this off-season doesn’t really give Atlanta a ton of room to work with, but they definitely need wingers who can complement their new DP in Breel Embolo up top.

I think the defense can be serviceable with a few tweaks, the midfield needs to lose about two bodies, and the rest requires extremely pointed decisions in the attack. Whatever version of a preseason that Tata Martino pushes on the squad needs to develop the chemistry far quicker than any team has ever seen.

Done done

Atlanta United done done it all and that’s all she wrote. There’s not much else to say about the 2026 season other than it’s an abject failure for the Five Stripes. The front office, the coaching staff, and everyone involved have much to think about and many actions to take between now and February 19th when the sprint season starts again. The goalkeeper needs to be changed, the midfield needs adjustment, and the attackers need some teeth minus, perhaps, Breel Embolo.

I don’t want to sit here and repeat myself, but there’s only so many things you can say about a team that will either win the wooden spoon, the wooden spork, or the yet-to-be-officially-named paper straw. It’s called trash for a reason.

Let us know below what you thought of the match season.
