A season full of subpar performances will, in all likelyhood, finally catch up to Atlanta United this evening as they head up to New York City for a midweek match on the diamond of Citi Field. To put it plainly, every other scenario besides the one in which Atlanta wins and RBNY loses and Columbus doesn’t win will be the final blow to the Five Stripes’ playoff bid for 2026.
Let’s begin with some head-to-head stats, courtesy of stats.scarvesandspikes.com:

Both sides come into the match with the looming shadow of elimination right on their backs. NYCFC could also see their season effectively ended tonight. New York City, if they fail to beat Atlanta, would need a win from the Revolution or, in the case of a loss, a win from FC Dallas to keep hopes alive.
The Pigeons have been in a bit of a slump, though, going winless in their last six. That stretch includes the last meeting between the two sides, a 2-2 draw in the Benz going back to the end of September during the international break that left both sides with heavily rotated rosters.
That won’t be the case this time, especially for Atlanta United, who will only miss two players tonight. Will Reilly continues to treat his ankle injury through the rest of the year, while Enea Mihaj is an addition to the availability report with a hip injury.
