It’s Decision Day, and yet there’s not a whole lot to decide between Atlanta United and Red Bull New York when they meet this afternoon.
Both sides are now officially eliminated from playoff contention with RBNY falling out last weekend, which leaves us with one more dead rubber match to see out the 2026 season. In any other circumstance, there’d be a good amount of nerves for the Five Stripes going into Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey, a place where they still have yet to win in the entire history of the club, an 0-6-3 record.
While Atlanta’s odds of a postseason appearance has been more or less over for a while now, the Red Bulls seemed to be in a decent position for one of the final few playoff spots as the end of the season approached. After losing five of their last seven games, though, RBNY has fallen out of the pack, and was officially given the dreaded “e” last week after an enthralling comeback from Nashville SC, who won 3-2 in stoppage time to continute their historic run at the Red Bulls’ expense.
While the Red Bulls look for a moral bounce back, the Five Stripes come into the final matchday on a high after their own moral victory, a 3-1 win over Toronto FC in a home finale that eliminated the Canadian side in dominant fashion. Miguel Almiron, Cooper Sanchez, and Alexey Miranchuk all scored as Atlanta generated a whopping xG of 4.60.
Both sides will have the ability to roll out lineups without fear of a lost result, although Michael Bradley’s side, led by teenagers Julian Hall and Adri Mehmeti, can’t be accused of not “playing the kids”. Tata Martino’s side will be without only Will Reilly, as Enea Mihaj returns to the roster for the final matchday of the year.
Kickoff from Harrison is set along with all other Eastern Conference matches at 4:10 pm ET. Streaming comes through Apple TV, and audio coverage is available on 92.9 The Game, while La Mejor is your go-to for Spanish radio.
