Goodbye 2024 MLS and HELLO offseason! Ready for some silly season? This guy is!

According to Manuel Veth of Transfermarkt, Atlanta United is interested in free agent midfielder Dru Yearwood. The 24-year-old is under contract with Nashville SC until the new year and reportedly the main obstacle is Yearwood’s salary.

Sources 🚨 Atlanta United are interested in signing free agent Dru Yearwood. Talks are still in early stages and parties are still apart when it comes to salary but Atlanta would like to make it work. Other clubs also interested. Yearwood's contract with Nashville SC set to expire Jan.1, 2025.

Yearwood primarily plays as a center midfielder, but has also played as a defensive midfielder. He had 28 appearances for Nashville SC across all competitions in 2024 where he recorded a goal and two assists.

Before joining Nashville earlier this season, Yearwood played 99 games for New York Red Bulls from 2020-2023. Prior to that, he made five appearances for Brentford FC in 2019 when the club competed in the EFL Championship.

If this is finalized, Yearwood would face some serious competition in Atlanta’s midfield with Ajani Fortune, Tristan Muyumba and Bartosz Slisz. A quick look at his FBRef profile shows mostly unremarkable stats, but he could do well in a No. 6 role where he can make the most of his defensive numbers.

I agree with the others, unless he comes in a lower cost and/or there are other moves that need to happen first before bringing him in, i’m not sure this is where the focus needs to be. I mean, Garth did mention wanting to bring in more veteran type players, and he fits the bill, but that would mean moving on from Fortune and/or Muyumba because Slisz is with us for a while and he’s shown more signs of improvement than Muyumba and a bit more than Fortune.

Unless there is another related move in central midfield (e.g, getting rid of Muyumba), I cannot think of a single reason this makes sense. And, even if we do have a related move, this wouldn’t make much sense to me at that salary. Maybe at $350-400K?

He made nearly $600k in 2024 playing for Nashville, so I’d imagine we want him for less than that since he made nearly the same thing as Muyumba and would be another moderately expensive part of a crowded central midfield.
