Atlanta United’s 2024 season ended much later than planned, thanks to a dream run in the MLS Cup Playoffs. But now it’s on to 2025, one of the most anticipated seasons in club history, beginning on Feb. 22 against Montreal and concluding with Decision Day on Oct. 18 against D.C. United.
Two of the biggest matches on the calendar, though, will be against Lionel Messi and Inter Miami. Atlanta hosts Miami on March 16, the first game between the two clubs since Atlanta eliminated the South Florida side from the 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs. Atlanta heads to Chase Stadium on July 5 for the return fixture.
As for away matches, Atlanta’s first contest outside Mercedes-Benz Stadium will be a Southeastern derby: it will visit Charlotte FC on March 1, while the annual trips to Orlando City and Nashville SC are set for April 26 and August 30, respectively. It’ll repay the favors when it welcomes Nashville on May 3, Orlando on May 28, and Charlotte on July 19.
Along with the typical home-and-away structure for all Eastern Conference teams, Atlanta will face six from the Western Conference: that includes a home match against Chucky Lozano and first-year outfit San Diego FC on September 20. FC Dallas comes to town on April 5 for the first meeting between the teams since 2023, while the Seattle Sounders pay a visit on July 26. Atlanta also travel to Austin FC on May 14 for its first ever match at Q2 Stadium, with stops at the Colorado Rapids (August 16) and LAFC (October 5) on the slate, too.
Of course, there are plenty of questions to be answered about next year’s club (namely regarding the technical staff and the roster), but while we wait for those to be answered, we at least know who and when Atlanta will be playing.
Some other notes from the MLS schedule as a whole:
- Leagues Cup will be between July 29 and August 31. In a change from previous years, though, there will be no regular season pause; both MLS and Liga MX will play league and cup matches concurrently. There’s a new format in the works that will be similar to the UEFA Champions League setup that took effect this season, according to Sounder at Heart’s Jeremiah Oshan. Also, 18 MLS teams have been confirmed to participate, presumably those that qualified for the playoffs in 2024.
- The 2025 Club World Cup will be held on American soil form June 15 to July 13; the league will pause briefly to accommodate. Atlanta will play six away matches in a row in late-May to mid-July with Mercedes-Benz Stadium set to host three group stage matches, a pair of Round of 16 ties, and a quarterfinal.
- What about the U.S. Open Cup? MLS controversially pulled out of the competition last year but later allowed 8 MLS clubs and 9 MLS NEXT Pro teams to participate. Don Garber, in his State of the League address before this month’s MLS Cup, did say that the Open Cup would be back in 2025, but Atlanta’s involvement is not know at this point.

Yay we get to play San Diego and get to play at Q2 stadium for the first time.
Per Doug they are supposedly opening the third level only for Montreal and Charlotte. I’m surprised not Miami.
it could always change. I would not be surprised if they announce opening up the 3rd level closer to the date, so they can control the flow of ticket, assuming Messi is available to play
Just received my group ticket details for next year and it shows the whole third level open for Montreal, Nashville, Charlotte, and DC. The first three make sense but surprised about DC. It also seems like they’re opening a portion of the third level for 5 other games – which seems odd but will confirm tomorrow.
So just purchased group tickets and confirm Doug was unsurprisingly correct that Montreal and Charlotte are the only currently scheduled full venue games. However, they are opening up the 3rd level goal section for all the games July 16 and after – so it seems like they’ll have a few thousand more seats available for those games.
