Atlanta United at NYCFC: Match Thread and How to Watch

Alright y’all, international break time’s over.

After some much needed time off after playing three matches in seven days, Atlanta United heads back up to New York, this time facing Ronny Deila’s former NYCFC side for the second time this season.

The Five Stripes’ last visit to the Big Apple (or, across the river from it) was met with an all too familliar loss against the Red Bulls in a drab 2-0 result. Atlanta had a better outcome against NYCFC back in March at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, where a 1-3 deficit became a 4-3 victory on the back of goals from all three Designated Players, including Latte Lath, who hasn’t found the back of the net (and had the goal stand) since. It sure would be nice to see him get back on the scoresheet tonight, wouldn’t it?

Speaking of, travel from international duty (and a lengthier injury report) will weigh in on squad selection for the visit to Yankee Stadium. Latte Lath and Ivory Coast played in Toronto on Tuesday, a best case scenario for the striker to rejoin the team. On the other hand, Miguel Almiron started in a World Cup qualifier against Brazil on Tuesday, a much harder situation to get back from. Luis Abram, Efrain Morales, Luke Brennan, and Noah Cobb all have lengthy journeys after recent matches as well. Saba Lobjanidze, who scored for Georgia over the break, should have plenty of time to travel following his most recent match on Sunday. Jay Fortune, meanwhile, will stay with his Trinidad and Tobago squad as they enter Gold Cup play against the USMNT on Sunday.

As far as injuries go, Josh Cohen is out for six weeks with a forearm fracture, while Cayman Togashi is out for at least a month as he recovers from a partial meniscus tear. Gregersen and Muyumba remain on the mend, and Edwin Mosquera recently joined the list with a minor injury. As a result of these missing players, Atlanta has brought up Cooper Sanchez and Nyk Sessock on Short-Term Agreements to fill out the roster.

NYCFC aren’t without some availability issues as well, with midfielder Keaton Parks out with a foot injury. Key goalscorer Alonso Martinez and starting goalkeeper Matt Freese will also miss out due to the Gold Cup.

Atlanta United hasn’t left Yankee Stadium with a win since the 2018 Eastern Conference Semifinal first leg, when Eric Remedi’s goal gave Atlanta’s MLS Cup run a huge boost in a 1-0 result. Can the Five Stripes get their first away win of the season and break a seven year streak in the process?

Kickoff from New York is set for a 7:40 PM ET start, with streaming coming from Apple TV with a subscription to MLS Season Pass. Radio coverage is provided in English on 92.9 The Game and in Spanish on La Mejor.

You can also join the Scarves and Spikes crew at Sababa’s Burgers in North Druid Hills for a watch party and live prematch show at 6:00 PM to welcome what is hopefully a better second half to the MLS season. If not, there’s always the match thread in the comments below as we watch the Five Stripes head back out to the ballpark for some Thursday night soccer.

Three goals in four minutes. Wow, we really suck at defense.

TJohnson30

The Prem starts back on August 16. UGA football starts back August 30 just fyi. I would mention the falcons but theyโ€™re gonna 8-9 again in the most spectacular fashion. See yall February 2026!

jayman0404

I wish this game was over so I could go to bed.

C0ntrari0

We have to finish fourth it better to guarantee a home playoff match?

Gatorsnake

No, the first round is still the best-of-3 nonsense. So every time after the play-in gets at least one home game.

VAMOS ATLANTA

Ya’ll remember December 8, 2018? Good times…

ATL 4 life

Beautiful day that was ๐Ÿฅน

Colt42

Nobody can take those first two years away from us.

C0ntrari0

Yet somehow I feel like they have.

jayman0404

This team has quit, both in this game and on the season. I do not think Deila is all of the problem but he bears the responsibility. I am tired of being embarrassed by this team.

jayman0404

It would be great if someone would show some emotion and make a hard tackle, even if it results in a red card.

jayman0404

I am looking at you, Klich…….

ATL 4 life

This team is done for the season. Not 1 away win this season like wtf man

Footie404

There is not a strong enough word for how bad this team sucks.

Colt42

Sucktastic? Sucktacular?

jayman0404

Worstest? Putid? Nope. The only word that fits is excrementitious (def. – of or relating to excrement).

Footie404

Getting there but hard to pull off without expletives.

C0ntrari0

Just got back. How we doing?

ShortRound_RB

I’m done. Tell me when we sell Lennon.

jayman0404

I am not saying Lennon is not good enough for MLS and cannot find another club but he is not good enough anymore for us. Painful to say but he needs to go.

Gatorsnake

Not really that painful to say.

VAMOS ATLANTA

You’d have to pay me to have him take up space on my roster.

Igor

For the 2nd half Saba should go to RWB, with LL to go up top. Lennon to the bench for the rest of the season lol

ShortRound_RB

I was originally thinking move Hernandez to RWB for Abram at LCB, but I like your idea better.

VAMOS ATLANTA

How is that not a pen bro

schyoo

at least our back line is consistent every week in that at least one of them will make a bad backward pass

ShortRound_RB

Bench Lennon, then use the buy out on him.

Matt5931

Iโ€™d really like to know the true stat, how many goals have we gifted like that.

Itโ€™s truly baffling to me

Gatorsnake

Lennon adding to his assist total.

Arroz y Pollo

Maybe we need to just start dressing him in the other team’s colors.

Bluto

He finally had an effective cross.

ShortRound_RB

omfg, Lennon.

ShortRound_RB

Lennon doing Lennon things

ShortRound_RB

Miranchuk playing well. Defense shaky but holding. Lennon continuing to do Lennon things.

ShortRound_RB

How the heck is that not a penalty?

ShortRound_RB

No f’ing way, even after VAR?

elemess

Thiare was taken out. Wasn’t given a chance to make a play on the ball. PK. But not, for reasons.

Matt5931

Makes no sense to me

ShortRound_RB

Is it just me, or is the camera lower and closer than usual? Like even for Yankee stadium

ShortRound_RB

Also, I forgot how much the field really looks like a u-10 field.

ShortRound_RB

Starting lineup announced, I wonder if itโ€™ll be the 3-5-2 itโ€™s been lately with Saba up top as depicted, or if itโ€™ll be more of a 4-2-3-1 with Lennon and Saba on the wings around Miranchuk, with Amador and Hernandez (or Edwards) as the FBs

schyoo

It could be that we defend in 3-5-2, but attack in a more 3-4-3, maybe a diamond 3-4-3 with Amador or Lennon pushing up higher

Clueless Joe

How did Cohen break his arm? Not that there’s much chance he’d have played tonight anyway.

Mic

Looks like another loss coming. I wonder what mistake will lead to it this week?

Mic

Lennon

schyoo

I would assume Miranchuk will play the 10 and Saba will also start at the wing. Latte should be available for a good chunk of the match, weather he starts or comes off the bench. Curious if we will play with 3 CBs or 2 CBs because we have no depth. I guess it will be Williams and Edwards, but I have no idea how much Cobb played while with the US U20. Looking forward to seeing what the matchday roster looks like.

Allen

Fingers crossed for a draw – but the lack of players / depth, and a porous defense likely sinks us (hope I am wrong!)

schyoo

I think NYC is missing some key players, including their starting goalie, so it could definitely be interesting and a great opportunity for some of our depth players to prove their worth.
