The Five Stripes just can’t catch a break in 2025.
With Atlanta United struggling to claw its way into a playoff spot, Jay Fortune, one of the team’s best performers, will likely miss the remainder of the 2025 season due to injury, the club announced Tuesday.
Fortune, 22, sustained a mid-foot sprain in his left foot while playing for the Trinidad and Tobago national team during Sunday’s final Gold Cup group stage game against Saudi Arabia. The injury will require surgery.
The homegrown midfielder started eight of Atlanta United’s 18 games in 2025 and quickly earned Head Coach Ronny Deila’s trust as one of the first names on the team sheet. He scored his first goal of the season a month ago in a 4-2 win over FC Cincinnati.
The Five Stripes now take the challenge of replacing his consistency in midfield into their next game at Columbus Crew tomorrow night.

How long will the 2019 championship curse last? Do I need to sacrifice a live chicken to pacify Jobu?
This thumbs up is directly related to the Major League reference.
Sucks that it happened to him as he’s gotten more time and grown tremendously. Hopefully he comes back stronger than before.
Next man up, which we have a few of right now. Guessing that gives Reilly a chance at more minutes, which I think is what he needs to shine.
Can this season just be over? Hopefully, nothing happens btw now and October that jeopardizes 2026. That is it; that is all we have; hope for the future.
I guess that is a hazard of having a lot of players who are good enough to get called up by their national team. Some of them are bound to get hurt during the extra duty.
Super unfortunate for Fortune (no pun intended), but I’m sure he’ll make a full recovery.
it definitely sucks that the injury happened during the final match of the group stages. it happened late in the match as well. only if he was subbed off a bit earlier, but it could also have been a situation where we were kicking the can down the road and he would have eventually needed the surgery.
