Atlanta United at Toronto FC: Match Thread and How to Watch

We’re so close, y’all. The away stretch from hell is one match away from being in the history books.

Atlanta United has been on the road since May 28th’s thrilling 3-2 win in the Benz against Orlando City. That was also the last time the team achieved a result worth feeling good about, as the sole point earned since then came in a snoozefest of a 0-0 draw in D.C. last weekend. Thank goodness the match at Inter Miami was moved, although I doubt it would’ve made much a difference. Easier to forget, if anything.

Atlanta now visits another bottom feeding team with 4 wins to their name in Toronto FC, who despite being next to last in the conference was able to demolish the Portland Timbers in their previous home match, 3-0. Last time out was a 3-1 loss to NYCFC at Yankee Stadium, but Toronto is a team finding themselves again after parting ways with DPs Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi. Toronto will face an away gauntlet of their own after today, going on the road for nearly a month until August 16th.

Meanwhile, Atlanta may be looking ahead to a three match home stand of their own, but none will be against an easier opponent than Toronto, who sits just underneath Atlanta in the table on 17 points. It’s been historically rough for the Five Stripes at BMO Field, only winning once back in October of 2021. Things don’t fare much better with an attacking output of only one goal over the last five matches. The midfield will have some help, though, with the return of Bartosz Slisz from yellow card accumulation. Stian Gregersen and Derrick Williams remain out, though, meaning another test for ATlanta’s Homegrgown defenders.

Will Atlanta finally break out of this goalscoring rut, or will things become even more demoralizing than they already are? We’ll see as the Five Stripes take to the pitch once again north of the border, set for a 7:40 PM ET start at BMO Field. Streaming per usuall will be from Apple TV with a subscription to MLS Season Pass. Radio coverage is provided in English on 92.9 The Game and in Spanish on La Mejor.

Just checking in to see how we look the last 15 minsโ€ฆ looks like we are still bottom-dwellers in MLS (which is status quo). Our back-up GK looks better than Guzan.

ShortRound_RB

That stoppage time was chaos. Is it just me or did one of Torontoโ€™s players get two yellows without being sent off?

Right Wing

Thatโ€™s what I thought tooโ€ฆ

ShortRound_RB

Google says it was given to Sharp, the one who committed the penalty. Unsure if he just happened to also be encroaching or what.

ShortRound_RB

Hibbert definitely looks like the future at GK. Really missing Fortune in midfield. Need a new RB. Almiron doing decent in making passes in the middle, but atrocious in the final third.

ricop001

Another game watching shitty player play a shitty game. This game is uninspiring, with no creativity. Best thing this game is hibert making the field. We should never see guzan ever again

schyoo

I think the team should just start fining players who pass backwards whenever there is no pressure on them

ShortRound_RB

And thereโ€™s the obligatory goal at the beginning of the second half

VAMOS ATLANTA

It’s the circle of Atlanta United life

VAMOS ATLANTA

One of the best first half peformances we’ve had this season. Then again, we are playing against a team with no DP’s so…

ShortRound_RB

Stop it Amador

ShortRound_RB

Wow, that actually looked good by the offense. Given against another team who also wants a soup utensil. Still, so close

Idc that it was offside. That goal gives me hope that if we put the pieces together, we can play ball.

ShortRound_RB

Great shot by lath, hope for his form to build back up

ShortRound_RB

No foul on laryea, heโ€™s just a wimp. Definitely offsides though.

VAMOS ATLANTA

Yo is this Atlanta United I’m watching? I think I clicked on the wrong match.

ShortRound_RB

Amador nearly the latest recipient of the opponent assist award

Anyone elseโ€™s video feed incredibly choppy?

schyoo

my quality dropped a little bit for a moment at the start, but currently fine on my end.

schyoo

Amador is struggling a lot early. A lot of heavy touches

ShortRound_RB

Battling to get the wooden spoon

elemess

6 point game!

VAMOS ATLANTA

Trash vs Garbage. Lowkey the best type of games lol

ShortRound_RB

Wasnโ€™t last week ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

VAMOS ATLANTA

True! But this just feels like a different type of trash team desperation.

VAMOS ATLANTA

SABA!!!

CelticBhoy

Etienne Jr scores on us in the 50th. Watch

Antzhort

He has scored 3 times more goals in Toronto than he ever did for us. โ€ฆ there is a good chance he scores tonight.

VAMOS ATLANTA

Sometimes, I feel like we are the Manchester United of MLS. Why do players seem to always under-peform here?

Matt5931

Iโ€™m intrigued with the reversion to Miggy out wide. On paper, I think this is our strongest line-up, but alas, the game isnโ€™t played on paper

schyoo

if it is similar to the last match. the formation will remain fluid, where Almiron will basically be everywhere with the ball, whether that is good or not.

Antzhort

As a 4231 this is it. I donโ€™t see anymore options I would argue for on the bench. Injuries, and maybe slight formation tweaks might slightly change personnel, but, agreed, it seems the right way to start – on paper
Letโ€™s see how the tactics and performances play out.

schyoo

Glad to see Atlanta is being smart and starting Hibbert at GK. Looking forward to seeing how he plays to see if he is an actual option at GK next season. Also, what does Cobb have to do to earn a start at CB???
