OFFICIAL: Atlanta United trades center back Efraín Morales to CF Montréal

Atlanta United announced that it will receive up to $800,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) from CF Montréal in exchange for center back Efraín Morales, the club announced on Wednesday. Of that amount, $450,000 is guaranteed, with an additional $350,000 in conditional GAM if performance-based incentives are met. Atlanta will also retain a sell-on clause.

Morales, 21, joined the club’s academy during its inaugural 2016-17 season at the U-12 level and became a homegrown player in August 2020. He made 12 first team appearances across all competitions, including earning a starting role in the club’s last five MLS games.

Morales represents Bolivia at the international level and has earned six caps since November 2024.

This is why I hate the knee jerk reactions some fans have when moves get made. They may not make sense on initial thought, or they may be emotionally attached to certain players, but usually there is a greater plan that needs to play out. We’ve been scammed by “we’re back baby” so it’s hard to believe much that’s going on…but we have to trust the process and that we will have ups and downs.

One thing that’s certain is you sometimes have to make room when looking to make signings and there is collateral damage in the process. Efrain was that in this case, but at least he gets to go somewhere he’ll likely be a starter and maybe follow the same footsteps Campbell did. We have defense issues, so drastic changes have to be made and it appears those are coming.

Eventually, after it’s clear the process is broken, you stop trusting it.

The move seems (even if so very slightly) more reasonable when considering that we might have two new centerbacks on the way. But still…

Only if scouting is correct and they’re actually good quality. “Bird in the hand worth two in the bush” or something. Even then, I’m assuming hoping we’re moving away from at least one if not two or three options ahead of him, so I don’t think the depth chart would’ve changed much for him.

I get the move, I understand they have to do it. I just hate that we’re in a position to have to do such a move in the first place, instead of letting these players flourish to their potential here.

I think we needed the GAM.

I know, I get it. It’s just going to really suck if these new players flop(particularly the CBs) that they bought using the Morales money.

It’s like pulling money out of your retirement fund to pay for your new business venture. Sure if it pays off you’ll have a lot more both in the near and distant future, but if you’ve already done this a few times and it’s flopped every time, at some point you’re just being stupid to not just let the assets you have develop.
