Germany secured passage to the World Cup’s Round of 32 with Deniz Undav’s late winner against the Ivory Coast yesterday, joining Mexico and the United States. The scene now shifts to Group G and H, where every team is on one point while a few of the tournament’s giants seek a bounce-back performance.
In Group G, Belgium fell behind Egypt 1-0 but eventually drew 1-1 behind Mohamed Hany’s own goal. Up next for the Red Devils at SoFi Stadium: Iran, which trailed New Zealand twice before sharing the honors after Mohammad Mohebi tied things up in the 64th minute. New Zealand and Egypt wrap up the day’s action in Vancouver.
The spotlight, though, will be on Spain after its shocking 0-0 draw against Cabo Verde in Atlanta. La Roja return to the Benz in search of all three points against Saudi Arabia to get things back on track in Group H. Later, at Hard Rock Stadium, Uruguay, expected to finish second behind Spain but needing an 80th-minute goal from Maxi Araรบjo to draw the Saudis, hope to spoil the mood of Cape Verdean fans when the teams meet at Hard Rock Stadium.
