It’s a massive Monday in World Cup action as we arrive at Matchday 12, featuring star-studded groups I and J.
In the early afternoon, we start with what could be the decicive match in group J as Argentina meet Austria in Arlington, Texas. Both teams have three points from their first group matches; a win for either would secure them first place in the group and a place in the Round of 32. Lionel Messi leveled the all-time men’s World Cup scoring record at 16 goals with a hat trick against Algeria, and will take sole ownership of the title with his next goal. Meanwhile, an upset for Austria by at least getting a draw would open this group up to chaos, down to the final matchday. Still, Argentina’s form should make them clear favorites when kickoff arrives at 1 p.m.
Next at 5 p.m., it’s Kylian Mbappรฉ’s 100th cap with France, who isn’t all that far behind Messi with 14 World Cup goals. He and the rest of the French squad are heavy favorites against Iraq, who dropped their first match 4-1 in favor of Norway. Didier Deschamps and France handled a tournament dark horse Senegal team with a resounding 3-1 victory, and are poised to do even more damage to a 57th ranked Iraq side.
Norway and Senegal at 8 p.m. will be the most high stakes match of the day, though, as both nations will desperately need the available points in group play. Norway has France looming on the horizon, while the AFCON finalists Senegal wrap up group play with Iraq, meaning a result here would be vital to final group positioning. Erling Haaland opened his World Cup account with a brace last match, and will be aiming to continue that form, while Nicolas Jackson, Sadio Mane, and the entire Senegal team will be looking to bounce back from their 3-1 defeat to France that was close for a majority of the match.
The day wraps up at 11 p.m. with the two bottom teams in Group J, Jordan and Algeria. Both sit at zero points after defeats to Austria and Argentina respectively, and will be looking to keep tournament hopes alive with a result tonight. It’ll almost certainly be Jordan’s last shot, as they face Argentina in their final group match, while Algeria will want a result to take into their finale against Austria, which could hold massive importance.
