After four straight dramatic finishes to begin the World Cup’s Round of 32, it looked as if Erling Haaland’s late winner for Norway against Ivory Coast would set the stage for yet another wild slate of matches. But France and Mexico coasted past Sweden and Ecuador, respectively, to become the latest to qualify for the next round.

Wednesday’s schedule starts at Mercedes-Benz Stadium as England faces DR Congo, just days after the Leopards topped Uzbekistan in the Benz for a historic knockout-stage berth. After that, Belgium faces Senegal, with the winner facing the winner of the USMNT/Bosnia and Herzegovina nightcap.

How DR Congo got to the Round of 32

What a ride for DR Congo, in the knockout rounds in its first World Cup appearance since 1974. It started with a shock 1-1 draw against Portugal before a 1-0 loss to Colombia. Then, on Saturday in Atlanta, it fell behind Uzbekistan before three goals in the second half โ€” including Fiston Mayele’s match-winner in the 78th minute โ€” gave it a 3-1 win and a ticket to the final 32.

How Belgium got to the Round of 32

Belgium came out on top in an unusual Group G despite winning just once, but it edged out Egypt, which it tied 1-1 in the opening match, on goal differential. Despite seven shots on goal against Iran, it finished 0-0 before the floodgates opened in a 5-1 win over New Zealand behind Leandro Trossard’s brace.

How Senegal got to the Round of 32

Senegal, the third-place finisher in Group I, fell 3-1 to France and 3-2 to Norway despite Ismaรฏla Sarr’s double. Needing a result to keep its Round of 32 hopes alive, it blew past Iraq 5-0. That scoreline ended up being enough to ensure a spot in the knockouts for the second consecutive World Cup.
