Atlanta United 2 will take on CT United FC in the conference quarterfinals of the MLS Next Pro Playoffs on October 18, as the East’s top four seeds selected their opponent on Wednesday.
ATL UTD 2 had no trouble with CT United in the season opener, defeating them 4-1 at the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Training Ground on September 8. Daniel Chica scored in the 22nd minute before the 2s scored three times in the second half (two of them own goals) to pull away after CT’s Barnabas Tanyi was sent off in the 54th minute.
CT United, coached by former Jamaica international and MLS defender Shavar Thomas, finished their inaugural season in seventh place in the East after a 14-12-2 mark. Tanyi’s team-high 16 goals were third in the league behind Atlanta’s Arif Kovac and Chattanooga FC’s Alex Krehl. In fact, only two teams in MLS NEXT Pro have scored more goals than CT: Crown Legacy FC with 67 and ATL UTD 2 with 62.
Kickoff time and venue for October 18’s match is yet to be confirmed.
