There is an Atlanta United soccer match happening on Wednesday evening, in case you weren’t aware. Atlanta is up north to take on CF Montréal in a battle of the two worst teams in the Eastern Conference. While neither team is officially eliminated from postseason contention nor will be officially eliminated with a loss, they’re both simply playing out the string.
The scoop on CF Montréal
6-16-6, 24 points, 15th in East
Last result: L 2-1 at Toronto FC (October 10)
Montréal is the only team that’s below Atlanta in the Eastern Conference standings right now. Basically the only player that is worth noting at this point is Prince Owusu, who has quietly put together a 15g/5a season. After showing just a glimpse of what he could do at Toronto FC, he’s taken things to the next level with CFM.
Outside of Owusu, Montréal have no consistent scoring threat. Daniel Ríos (remember him?) has six goals and has found the net in back-to-back appearances. The well’s quite dry outside of that. It’s also allowed 56 goals (fourth-highest in MLS). Take a 7-1 loss to Miami and the fact that it allowed eight goals in its first two matches out of the equation, though, and that number goes down to a respectable 41.
That’s basically all you need to know. Thomas Gillier, the starting goalkeeper, is out due to injury, meaning Sébastian Breza will get the call. Marco Donadel, who took over as interim head coach in 2025 after Laurent Courtois was sacked, was named permanent head coach in the offseason…only to be fired himself after a 1-6-1 start. Phillipe Eullafroy is 5-10-5 as interim boss. In other words, if you think Atlanta United is in disarray, Montréal, which ran off Wilfried Nancy only to see him lead the Columbus Crew to an MLS Cup, has them beat.
Atlanta United at CF Montréal injuries, availability
Atlanta United – Will Reilly remains out with an ankle injury. Tomás Jacob is out due to yellow-card accumulation.
CF Montreal – Gillier, as mentioned, is out. Bryan Ceballos, who was injured on Saturday, is out for the rest of the year, as is Bode Hidalgo. Brayan Vera will serve a yellow-card suspension and won’t play, either.
Atlanta United’s projected lineup at CF Montréal (4-3-3)

GK: Lucas Hoyos
D: Elias Báez, Júnior Alonso, Paulo Díaz, Matt Edwards
M: Giuliano Galoppo, Mauricio Amaro, Cooper Sanchez
F: Breel Embolo, Miguel Almiron, Alexey Miranchuk
Score prediction: CF Montréal 1-1 Atlanta United
This one wil be befitting of a match between two teams looking ahead to 2027. A rather boring affair will end in a draw heading into Atlanta’s home game against Inter Miami.
