Atlanta United put together a disappointing showing at Sports Illustrated Stadium in their season finale, losing 2-0 to Red Bull New York on Decision Day.
Atlanta’s best chance of the first half came in the eighth minute as Miguel Almirón latched onto a long ball from Elías Báez, but his shot hit square off the left post with Breel Embolo in space to his right.
Later, Red Bull scored the opener. After Ronald Donkor played a ball into Adri Mehmeti, Jayden Hibbert made the initial save on the teenager’s resulting shot. As the ball remained loose in the box, though, Mehmeti eventually put it in for a 1-0 lead.
In the 54th minute, RBNY increased their advantage. Cade Cowell took a perfect through ball from Sekou Kone, pulled Hibbert off his line, and scored on an open goal to make it 2-0.
Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty made it 3-0 in the 81st minute, as his soaring free kick from just outside the box added further confirmation of Red Bull’s dominance.
And that was that. Atlanta put out a listless performance, managing precious little in the attack as their season came to a unceremonious end. It finished the year at 9-19-6.
