Atlanta United receives international roster spot in trade with Seattle

Atlanta United announced today that it’s traded $100k in General Allocation Money to Seattle for an international roster spot.

Why would Atlanta need another international roster spot, you ask? Well, if the Five Stripes were actively in the market for a certain Designated Player making the move from Atalanta, they’d certainly need an international roster spot to make room for his addition. This may very well be the first domino to fall in what fans are hoping will be a busy incoming secondary transfer window, after a record setting group of outbound transfers.

For reference, Thiago Almada had his green card so he didn’t use an international spot. Pedro Amador essentially took the one vacated by Giorgos Giakoumakis, leaving this new one from Seattle.

The Five Stripes are sitting on the edge of the Eastern Conference playoff line in MLS, so any transfers in the next 16 days will hopefully have plenty of time to settle in with the team before actual league play starts back up at the end of August. In the meantime, Atlanta United will be keen on showing well in the ongoing Leagues Cup. They sit with a point in their group after a penalty shootout loss to D.C. United on Friday, but a win against Santos Laguna on Sunday would keep them alive and move them out of the group.

Meanwhile, any other incoming transfers would be able to spend time with the team, train, and focus on their relocation to the Deep South. Be sure to follow our summer transfer tracker here, and let us know down below what moves you think may be on the way!

Well as you pointed out, assuming we’ve made a bid for Miranchuk that seems the obvious choice. Honestly 100k is kind of a steal here, and if we need another for any more reinforcements it could make sticking under the cap dicey.

Did Almada get a green card or something? I would’ve thought Almada and GG both held international spots, which would mean we still have one open after signing Amador..

Thanks for the clarification!
