Santiago Sosa’s time with Atlanta United has officially come to an end.

The midfielder, who was loaned to Racing Club ahead of the 2024 season, has been purchased outright by the Argentinian club, Atlanta announced on Friday. Sosa’s transfer fee was not disclosed as per club and league policy, but according to a report from Cesar Luis Merlo in November and added reporting from Tom Bogert, Atlanta will receive $4 million plus $2.5 million in add-ons. They’ll also receive a 25 percent sell-on fee.

Atlanta were already set to have one U22 slot open as Franco Ibarra, on loan at Rosario Central, did not have his option picked up. Sosa’s was, keeping him under Atlanta’s control as they facilitated a sale of the 25-year-old.

Sosa, who signed in 2021 from River Plate, played his final match for Atlanta on September 2, 2023. He totaled 64 matches with the club in MLS play, including 52 starts. In 2024 with Racing, he appeared in 48 matches, ultimately winning Copa Sudamericana in November against Cruzeiro.

It’s an unsurprising move for both parties, but just another piece of the puzzle ahead of some major moves in the winter for Atlanta.

Makes sense and expected. After those first 10 or so games, I was convinced we found a top player. Then it all seemed to fall apart. Wish him luck.

What are we doing with Ibarra if the buy trigger fell through?

greggtsch

It is my understanding that Atlanta did not pick up Ibarra’s option for 2025.

ATLiens17

Correct. Ibarra is no longer on the roster.

SD2ATL

Dude was a good pick up for us but I don’t see him having a spot with our current roster. Best of luck.

Yet another player out. PLEASE give me some incoming player news! And a coach! And a TD!
