Tristan Muyumba set to miss at least three weeks with LCL sprain

Atlanta United announced today the results of Tristan Muyumba’s injury he sustained in Saturday’s match against FC Cincinnati. The resurgent midfielder was carted off the pitch stemming from a moment in the 41st minute where he committed to a tackle, and when he tried to hop up, he immediately crumpled back to the grass in obvious pain. The club revealed he sprained his lateral collateral ligament (LCL) and strained his calf muscle.

No injury is necessarily “good” timing, but this one is really bothersome for Tristan Muyumba, who has been in a revived form after having a tough 2024 season. However, from a full-squad perspective, the news is manageable. With the international break coming to a close, other midfielders like Bartek Slisz and Jay Fortune will be back available for selection starting with Atlanta’s home match this weekend vs NYCFC. Mateusz Klich, who saw time on Saturday coming off the flu and a quad injury, will also likely be heavily utilized in the meantime.

And who knows, maybe Ronny Deila’s experiment with DP Alexey Miranchuk as a deeper lying midfielder will continue forward into future matches? After Muyumba’s injury on Saturday, the gaffer brought in Cayman Togashi as a second forward and pushed Miranchuk back to play more of a connector role…and it worked fairly well. For a deep dive into how that could work (and it’s promising), take a look here.

Either way, we wish the best for Tristan and hope to see him back out there soon!

Dang. We don’t have another real CDM on the roster. I think we can play without him, but it will limit our style, and we won’t have a true ball winning midfielder

Klich can play that position too I believe.

Too bad. He was showing some aggressiveness that was lacking before and his lackadaisical attitude when having the ball was gone. I think he also underestimated MLS speed.

Agree with the other comments. Muyumba has returned to his original form so it sucks seeing him go out for a little bit but hopefully he comes back stronger.

I still agree, we need to try Miranchuk at that 8 spot and see how the new front 4 vibe.

Considering our depth in the midfield, I am not too concerned about Muyumba being out, but it does suck for him since he was looking good so far.

It sucks for Muyumba since he was starting to round into a good form, but I’m glad it’s only 3 weeks!
