RUMOR: Atlanta United in talks to sign goalkeeper Guido Herrera

Atlanta United has reportedly initiated talks to sign goalkeeper Guido Herrera from Argentinian side CA Talleres, according to reporter Germán García Grova.

Herrera, 33, started 35 games across all competitions for Talleres in 2025, keeping 13 clean sheets as the club finished 14th in the Apertura and 8th in the Clausura in Group B of the league.

The Río Cuarto native joined Talleres in 2016, before going on loan to Yeni Malatyaspor in the Turkish first division. He also had stops at CA Belgrano II and CAS Defensores de Belgrano.

From his highlights, Herrera appears to be a goalkeeper who can rush out quickly, likes to be off his line, and has a catalogue of impressive saves.

Herrera is also reportedly being pursued by Inter Miami CF.

Great.
33, wasn’t that Guzan’s age in 2017?
…he has 8 more years in him 😉

Also, it appears he’s their captain. Good sign.

seems like guz with better distribution. that being said, if he’s coming as a back up, why waste the int’l spot? if he’s coming as a starter, then, just, why? hibbert showed himself solid enough to be the starter with a LOT of upside. i’m sure there will be some bumps with him, but i would rather invest in the future.

and wow, do we have a lot of other needs right now. cbs, fbs, wingers, defensive midfielder. i sure hope we focus on those needs.

Not that I disagree with anything you said, but having a young goalie can be covered with a good backline. If you have an experienced goalie, it can help an average backline be a good backline. So it can be cheaper to find an experienced goalie than to fill all the holes in our backline.
I personally think the highest need is at FB, obviously a starting level RB and some depth at LB, especially if we don’t plan on using Chong Qui regularly. Definitely need additional depth at CB/DCM. I think we could hold off on a winger/attacking players until the summer window just to see how the current attacking players work within Tata’s system

I don’t know what Atlanta’s current international slot situation looks like, but still doesn’t seem ideal to spend an international slot on a goalie…

Clueless Joe

Not unless he is expected to start every game, I guess. I’m not sure if the roster is good enough to win right now if we can just get an experienced keeper and let Hibbert develop a little more with the 2s or maybe play in the Open. Think we’d better off shoring up other holes with international slots and other signings and let Hibbert develop on the pitch.

But they didn’t ask me.

schyoo

Exactly, I think most people think international slots are better used on outfield players, not on goalies

Clueless Joe

Yep, the greatest keeper in the world isn’t going to stop an unmarked striker sitting alone at the opposite post.

Here we go, we’ll be shifting back to Argentina United for 2026.

Allen

I’m okay with that – it won the 2018 MLS Cup

Also, seeing that he’s being connected to Inter Miami, seems to me either us or Miami are a red herring.

TioMessi

Ok, admittedly I’m no expert on the Argentine league, but am I the only one confused at how a team can have 13 clean sheets and still be so low in the standings? Must be a lot of 0-0 draws in there.

Anyway, looks to be good. I wish we would focus on areas of extreme need (considering we know Jayden is totally sufficient as the new starter, at least for 2026) but I won’t be mad if we bring 13 clean sheets to Atlanta.

Mia San Atl

His team’s offense is terrible, like 0.7 or so goals per game this year. DC United was last in MLS this season at around 0.9 GPG.

ShortRound_RB

Must be a lot of 0-0 draws in there.

That appears to be the case. In the 32 games of Apertura and Clausura combined, they only allowed 27 goals, but also only scored 20. 13 of their games were draws.

I’m assuming that if he was brought in he would be the starter? It would seem odd to use an international slot and get the starter GK and captain from another team, at 33yrs old, only for him to sit on the bench.

SD2ATL

Much of this is moving in parallel, obviously, so seeing a rumor for a goalkeeper doesn’t mean they’re not focused on the midfield or strikers and such, just means they have more advanced talks for a specific player.

Also, much of this is likely coming from Tata flexing his contacts and knowledge while other scouting may not be as advanced yet.
