World Cup matches are officially underway across all three host nations now after two capitvating days of action as each kicked off on home soil. (As well as South Korea-Czechia, because why not.)
We get well and truly into the swing of things today with a grand total of four matches on the docket across three separate groups, completing the first set of matchups in Groups B, C, and D.
The action starts at 3 p.m. ET with Qatar vs. Switzerland in Santa Clara (noon local time on the west coast) in one of the more mismatched pairings of the group. ย Granit Xhaka, Breel Embolo and the 19th ranked Swiss should see off the former hosts Qatar, who are in their second ever tournament and still looking for a first World Cup result.
From there we go to arguably the most anticipated match of the weekend, a top-10 clash between Brazil and Morocco that could potentially decide first and second places in Group C. The 6 p.m. ET kickoff in New Jersey will draw plenty of global eyes as five time World Cup champions Brazil, along with Vinicius Jr. and Neymar’s last dance come up against last tournament’s fourth place team Morocco, who became the highest achieving African side by reaching the semifinals, where they fell to France.
The vibes should remain high as we move from World Cup regulars to World Cup returnees as Haiti, qualifying for the first time since 1974, faces Scotland, returning after a 28 year absence. Former Atlanta United player Derrick Etienne Jr.’s Haiti side will be up against it in what should be a fierce matchup against Scotland, as a win for either would be a massive step towards qualifying before facing the other two heavyweights in Group C. Expect a rocking atmosphere in Foxborough at 9 p.m. ET.
Finally, should you choose soccer over sleep, it’s a key matchup in Group D at midnight on the east coast as the other two nations, Australia and Turkiye, go to battle and set up the storylines for next week’s matchups. BC Place in Vancouver is the venue for a preview of the U.S.’s next two opponents in what should be a closely contested match, depsite this being Turkiye’s first tournament in 24 years. The United States will see Australia in Seattle, while Paraguay will face Turkiye on Friday, June 19th.
