Day 6 of the World Cup saw some of the world’s biggest stars in Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Erling Haaland each live up to the billing. Day 7 takes us to Groups K and L, where Cristiano Ronaldo, Harry Kane, and James Rodrรญguez are among the players taking the pitch for the first time this tournament.
Portugal vs. DR Congo starts the day at 1 p.m. The big story, of course, revolves around the 41-year-old Ronaldo in his final World Cup as he looks to secure the one trophy that’s so far escaped his grasp. DR Congo, meanwhile, hasn’t been to a World Cup since 1974, since the country was known as Zaire and was under dictatorial rule. We’ll see Lรฉs Leopards on June 27 in Atlanta vs. Uzbekistan; click here to read up on the African country if you haven’t already.
England, still in the hunt for a first title since 1960, takes on Croatia in Arlington. This one sees another legend face the beginning of the end of his World Cup career in Luka Modric, who got as close as he could get to the trophy in 2018 before a third-place finish in 2022. The team Croatia knocked out in 2018’s semifinal? None other than England.
Ghana and Panama take the stage in Toronto for the day’s third match. Ghana is looking to better its 2010 appearance, when it advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to Uruguay in penalties. But it’ll be without Thomas Partey after the 33-year-old was denied entry into Canada due to rape charges. Panama, making just its second appearance, lost all of its group stage matches in 2018.
We put a bow on the night as a tournament debutant, Uzbekistan, faces Colombia in Mexico City. As mentioned above, the Uzbeks will be in Atlanta on June 27; here’s the scoop on the White Wolves and their tournament outlook. Colombia, which missed 2022’s tournament, reached the quarterfinals in 2018 but fell to Brazil despite Rodrรญguez’s late penalty.
