Atlanta plays host to one last group stage match tonight before the World Cup’s knockout round begins as the Marietta-based Uzbekistan side meets DR Congo in a high stakes affair with both facing elimination scenarios in Group K.

In a group with powerhouses like Colombia and Portugal, who currently hold the top two automatic knockout round qualification spots, this match between the two lower ranked sides was always going to be a vital one.

Uzbekistan, even after their thrashing in the second round against Portugal to the tune of 5-0, are clinging to life in this tournament. Two losses and a -7 goal differential mean that even with three points on the final day, it would still take overecoming at least a six goal margin for the White Wolves to challenge for one of the top eight third-place spots.

DR Congo have fared better against the two favorites, battling Portugal to a 1-1 draw to open their World Cup campaign before a narrow 1-0 loss to Colombia in their second match. This sets up the Leopards well for a potential third place qualification- but only with three points against Uzbekistan. A loss or draw would not be enough to see them through on points. Theoretically, a big win combined with a heavy Portugal loss would see DR Congo jump as high as second in the group should goal differential work out.

Both sides got here by playing in a structured, defensive manner through qualifying and into the World Cup itself, both scoring just a single goal so far. But with tournament survival on the line, attacking quality will make the difference in the final group round.

The drama of final group stage play awaits us tonight, but which side takes full advantage? Whose World Cup run will come to an end in Atlanta?
