How to watch Spain/Austria, Portugal/Croatia, Switzerland/Algeria in the Round of 32

The USMNT is through to the Round of 16 after a 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina (despite a questionable red card to Folarin Balogun and thanks in part to a Malik Tillman wondergoal). That capped a Wednesday that begin with, you guessed it, drama. In Atlanta Harry Kane saved England with a second-half brace against DR Congo before Belgium overturned a late 2-0 deficit and cashed in on a controversial penalty after the 120th minute to beat Senegal.

Thursday brings us plenty of star power. Lamine Yamal and Spain face Austria. Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modriฤ‡ square off for the final time in a World Cup. The nightcap isn’t as eye-catching as the first two, but Switzerland vs. Algeria should still be a fun affair.

How Spain got to the Round of 32

Spain’s road to the top spot in Group H didn’t start out smooth, as it drew Cabo Verde 0-0 in Atlanta behind a heroic performance in goal by Vozinha. It got back on track with wins in its next two: a 4-0 rout of Saudi Arabia that saw Yamal’s first World Cup goal and a Mikel Oyarzabal brace, followed by a 1-0 victory over Uruguay.

How Austria got to the Round of 32

Austria, second-place in Group J, opened with a 3-1 win over Jordan before giving up a Lionel Messi brace in a 2-0 loss to Argentina. The group stage finale against Algeria was a wild one as Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez gave his team a 3-2 lead in 90+3′ before Saลกa Kalajdลพiฤ‡ pulled things level in 90+6′ to rescue an important draw.

How Portugal got to the Round of 32

Portugal had a disappointing Group K, starting with a 1-1 draw against DR Congo. A 5-0 win over Uzbekistan, which included a Ronaldo brace, was probably to be expected. But a 0-0 draw against Colombia during which it managed just two shots on goal certainly didn’t inspire confidence, as Seleรงรฃo finished second in the group behind Los Cafeteros.

How Croatia got to the Round of 32

Croatia, Group L’s second-place finisher, absorbed a 4-2 loss to England to start things off. That was its only loss of the group stage, though, as it responded with victories over Panama (1-0) and Ghana (2-1).

How Switzerland got to the Round of 32

Switzerland had a win over Qatar in its grasp until Miro Muheim’s dramatic goal at 90+4′ saw the match finish in a 1-1 draw. It won its next two, though, coasting past Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-1 on Johan Manzambi’s double and holding on to beat Canada 2-1 to win Group B.

How Algeria got to the Round of 32

Algeria’s World Cup couldn’t have started worse as Messi’s hat trick saw it walk away with a 3-0 loss. It fell behind Jordan 1-0 in the first half before Nadhir Benbouali’s 69th-minute equalizer and Amine Gouiri’s winner in 82′ staked it to a 2-1 victory. Then came June 27 against Austria, where a late lead was wiped out by an even later goal.
