While the United States men’s senior national team is preparing to co-host the 2026 World Cup with Canada and Mexico, the U-20 World Cup is got underway in Chile this past Friday. It’ll be of particular interest to Atlanta United fans as winger Luke Brennan and center back Noah Cobb (currently on loan with the Colorado Rapids) are part of the U.S. team that will look to break through after getting no further than the quarterfinal in the last four editions of the tournament.

The U.S. is in Group E which features 2013 champion France, South Africa, and New Caledonia. With the top two teams from each of the six groups advancing to the knockout stage plus the top two overall third-place finishers, a failure to return to the knockout round would be a massive disappointment for the Americans.

Along with Brennan and Cobb, Marko Mitrovic’s roster features several other MLS names, including Reed Baker-Whiting (Seattle Sounders), Luca Bombino (San Diego FC), Taha Habroune (Columbus Crew), Zavier Gozo (Real Salt Lake), Peyton Miller (New England Revolution), Brooklyn Raines (Houston Dynamo) and Frankie Westfield (Philadelphia Union) among others.

Former Inter Miami man Benja Cremaschi, now with Parma, will also take part, along with Borussia Dortmund winger and Atlanta native Cole Campbell. Meanwhile, highly touted FC Barcelona reserve goalkeeper Diego Kochen was recalled by his club and replaced with Brondby keeper and former RSL backstop Gavin Beavers.
